Thumbs down so my cpu is stuck to my HSF..

as the title states.
went to take my stock HSF off, undid the bracket thingy and clips, and took it off. to my surprise, there was no cpu in the socket

its stuck to the HSF with the white generic goop. the sink was still warm but it was still stuck quite well, and i didnt want to use excessive force. so....

have i done any damage to the cpu itself? the little lever next to the socket was obviously still down.

and how the hell do i get it unstuck?

It's probably fine, inspect the pins to make sure they're all there and not bent, but this isn't that uncommon an occurrence. Twisting the CPU (again, being careful of the pins) should work it off. You could try leverage using a flat screwdriver but don't over do it, you could damage the CPU packaging (not to mention scratching the heatsink base.)

LOL for a second there i thought it said (banned)under Agg's name.....hehehe

yeah CPUs getting stuck is normal especially on bloody P4s.......my AS5 is stuck on CPU now too but you can normally just slide it off........you should get some Ceramique stuff as it doesn't get stuck like AS5 or some of the stock goop

use a razor blade and some nail polish remover to get that crap off...i think that's what aokman mentioned somewhere

Nah, I think you'll be fine
Ive had that sam ething happen to me 4 times so far (damn white crap) on the same CPU and it is fine. No pins were bent at all and the CPU is still powering along fine :P

To get the CPU unstuck, I usually just wiggle it around and slowly slide it off the edge of the HSF

thanks guys.
i got the HSF nice and warm with a hairdryer and it wriggled off quite easily.
strange though, i powered down and removed the HSF straight away, i thought there would have already been enough heat there.
anyway, the system is up and running now, no probs

as a general rule give the hsf a SLIGHT twist before removal, usually stops it getting stuck, and yeah a razor blade is the best tool ive found to date, but i usuallyuse either goof off(xylene) or isopropyl(alchohol, 99%, dont drink me) wipes/liquid when i can find it. both seem to work amazingly well.

its happened to me before, my ex P4 was stuck to the HSF. no harm done, the pins were all ok. was a bitch to get the CPU off the heatsink, ended up being a big mess as i slided it across the HSF smearing thermal paste everywhere. was too scared to pull it off thinking i would damage it

ever thought about some fishing line and slid it between the hfs and cpu (that is how i get the badges of my car as it is same principal glued on) and use it in an sawing motion

I had this happen to me for the first time early this week... VERY scary thing to happen.... stupid stock thermal pad.... I even heated it up for 15mins on full load to 'soften' the pad before I removed the cooler but it didn't help

Ah well, all is good now... as long as you haven't bent any pins on the CPU it should be fine.

It does happen a LOT regardless of thermal compund to P4 CPUs. I saw a guy at gamedude the other day with his CPU stuck well on to the HSF. He had all sorts of trouble getting it off and bent the pins. They took it away and brought it back 10 seconds later, straightened the pins and fired it up. Worked fine.

I've had numerous CPU's stuck to HSF's in my day. I've found that without a doubt, the best way to get then unstick is to remove the fan from the heatsink, boil some water in a kettle, pour the water into a saucer (about 5mm deep) and put the heatsink in the water upside-down (so that the CPU isn't in the water, dummy!).

Let it soak for two minutes. The water will make the heatsink a toasty temperature, making it trivially simple to give the CPU a gentle twist off.

Works every time!

the moral of the story here
" don't use so much thermal paste"
