Default nVidia 7800GTX Fan Mod.

Hey Guys,

I just modded my 7800GTX, below is a link to a pic to show how it finished up, i cut the cover plate to keep the original fan working like it was and asthetics are better too. i then used a quiet TT fan (glows red ) and voila! Check it out below.

I am happy that the mod has still kept my case silent as I hate my friends vacuum cleaner full of dick smith electronics fans lol.

Cheers
Ben

lol i didnt cut the heatsink?? i never said that. hehe i cut the plastic cover plate yeah i removed the plastic cover first but the standard fan would have been useless cause its the centrifugal type which relies on the housing to channel air. so i cut the cover plate to line up with the next fan so both fans were effective. oh and I have a spare cover with a pretty picture on it anyways

the heat sink is untouched and the fan is attached by zip ties, just looped around the edge of the sink.

Works quite well too IDLE: 38degreesC LOAD: 50degreesC
and 7800gtx owners will know thats atleast 5 degrees cooler across the board. I measured using an indepent thermometer. I put the sensor between the heatsink and chip to take those temps too.

Nah I got my tax return back so i decided I wasn't going to have a system that stuggled anymore in games... next step SLI

Why would you do a think like that? Is there a reason or did you get bored? (not flaming, just really confused as why you would hack a 7800 to pieces)

Actually remnds me of the guy whos PCI-e card didne fit in thePCI pr AGP slot,, so he got a hacksaw and sawed the contacts...

So let me get this straight.... you voided the warranty of a $700+ card in order to fit a $12 fan

Should have done what I did.... $9 Zalman 90mm fan + bracket and i'm getting the same temps, and i'm up to 532(572)/1380 stable only using the 'detect frequencies' in coolbits

What the? What piece of my 7800gtx card have i hacked apart from a piece of plastic fascia cover that i have a spare of?

I dont see what all the fuss is about? i didnt hack the card at all. maybe read the whole thread? cause the card is untouched the only thing i cut was the fascia piece of plastic that normally covers the main heatsink and i didnt cut it off the card i unscrewed it. Hardly doing anything to a $700+ card.
Its not a bolt on mod, its a zip tie on mod so no changes have been made to the card whatsoever.

Cheers
Ben

Hmmm i did'nt realise there was a cooling problem with this card.

But yeah it's your card your money and you can do what you damn well please but i can see where the others are coming from in a way, the only thing that concerns me is you just voided your warranty.

How will they know? I can take the fan off and screw the new fascia back on and the card "is" (not "looks") "is" stock again.

Oh and while we are on the warranty thing, every time someone overclocks their video card it is void of warranty as you are running the card outside of manufacturers specs. (States this in any factory overclock utility)

If your oc'ed 7800 and my oc'ed 7800 went back to warranty service i can only say that my card will look exactly the same as yours and if they reject mine they will reject yours cause the only thing killing the cards is oc'ing up tha wazoo. (tech term: Running @ Settings outside of Manufacturers Specs)

Heaven forbid someone doing their own thing and not being a sheep about it.
Anyways I better go the warranty police are at my door.

Silverbullet: No cooling issue at all. I like a lot of enthusiests like to tinker.

Cheers for the comments guys, yes even the critisizing ones

Cheers
Ben

oh no i overclock man 525/1350 so far
If i was leaving it at base clocks why would I change the cooling the HSF is made by the manufacturer for the designed specs. I just want more.

Latest 3DMark05 Result: 8963 w/ x24400@2.6 & 7800 specs above can provide link if needed, as it wont let me publish it.

And "why" I do it is simple... Cause I can.

Cheers

Ah, so you kept the original plastic cover of the card and modded an alternate one.

If you had modded the original one then I would have continued with my 'that was stupid' line of thinking

Come on... make the card squeal.... 9000 3dmark05 already

One thing i'd be worried about, however... is the standard fan would be pushing its air against the pressure of the air from that 80mm fan... you could possibly cause damage to the stock fans motor (might be an idea to disconnect it).
