Default New laptop with docking station

I have a friend who is after a new laptop computer, but also wants to use it as a desktop. I suggested buying an additional LCD monitor, and a wireless keyboard/mouse set. They then asked if you could still get docking stations. I haven't seen them around for a while, I just looked at some sponsor sites and they don't seem to have any.

- Are docking stations still in use, readily available?

- Are they brand/model specific?

- Is there an easier/smarter way to do this, the docking station saves plugging in the charger, keyboard/mouse and lcd I guess.

There are a few notebooks which have specific docking station but normally it is just as easy to get something like http://www.targus.com/au/product_det...sp?sku=ACP50AU so all you would have to connect is one usb port and a power.

I know the ibm T series supports docking stations, I'm using one right now. really handy, don't have to worry about travelling with a power pack when between work and home.
