Default Which Shuttle?

Hey Guys,

In a sorta dilemma here.. I'm buying a new comp for my girlfriend (b'day present) and was thinking of getting her a SFF Shuttle system. The problem is I don't know which one to buy... And was looking @ these choices:

Shuttle SB83G5A
Shuttle SN25P (heard these were good but expensive @ $580 T_T)

I'm trying to keep the budget as low as possible (was originally thinking of getting her a Intel Socket 478 or a AMD Socket 462 system - got a 1800+XP spare lying here)

So... I could either go 1) Cheaper option (478, 462) - which will overall cost me around $600 or 2) Expensiver option (775, 939) - which would end up $800 - $900.. Thing is I was thinking of getting a LCD too, which means another $400

So... would it be worth forking another $300 for a system that would be faster than mine?

She will probably be needing it for net access and Word processing only.. But I feel like getting her something new & cool..

Please help me decide pplz...

Heh not a bad bday present.

Get her a cheap SN45G system to pair up with that 1800+. It's the cheapest option and would be more than enough for office use.

I'd second that, look for one of the latter SN45Gs that have the 250W PSU, add the RAM, HDD, DVD Burner, Video, etc. and she'll have a small computer that is great. I could never go back to a "standard size" tower again.

If you go for a passively cooled video card it should be fairly quiet as well.

Cheers Pedro :-)

As an authorised Shuttle dealer, I'd recommend the SN45G.

Just make sure the shop you get it from is selling the Version 3. Which has the Silent X PSU and SATA controller onboard. The earlier versions did not have SATA, if this is important or not (the V3 still has ATA as well).

Also, the V1's are very loud compared to what's going today. So, just make sure you get a V3 if you get an SN45G.

Thanks for the replies guys,

If I'm not mistaken the SN45G is a nForce 2 board and the nForce 4's are already out already.

And anyone know how to tell a SN45G V3 from the earlier models because doing a search on staticice does not really actually help.

Only thing is that I'll rather spend another $100+ (on the shuttle) to get her a system that is probably a bit up to date than rather 3 years behind...
(SN45G average around $360, $470 could get me a SB83G5A)

I don't mind spending a little extra for something that is much futureproof and has a much better performance outcome. Overall an extra $300 for a system that is much newer and has more performance is worth it in my eyes..

So...... any suggestions?

Hmmm.... kinda answered my own question here =_+

But anyways what is so good about the SN45G? I mean it's pretty old technology, so why are you guys recommending it so much?

And would AMD or Intel be a better option for the Shuttles? i.e mobos better than the other etc.?

It's cheap, you've already got a CPU to fit and you stated that it's only going to be used to perform light tasks. You most probably don't need a more expensive unit to do this. If on the other hand you want to spend more money and get a unit that can be used for gaming as well with newer technologies then there are a host of models to suit.

Cheers Pedro :-)

Ok, well tried ordering a SN45G from a few stores and they said they don't order them anymore...

So, anyways I ordered her a SB835GA (Intel 775) so I'm looking for a Intel CPU now..

I currently a 120gb Seagate SATA HDD and a 2x256 Corsair DDR spare, which I'll be putting into her comp..

So anyone got any suggestions on a Intel 755 CPU? Keyboard/Mouse combo (Logitech)? And a 17" LCD?
