Default iPod hard drive dead/dying

I own a generation 3 (click-wheel) iPod, which was bought in July of 2004.

I was at a party last night, and my iPod was plugged into my friends PC, copying stuff over. I woke up this morning, only to find it wouldn't turn on. It wouldn't get past the Apple logo loading screen. I put it up to my ear and I could hear the hard drive spinning up, then a clunk, then the iPod resetting.. someone must've dropped it off the table or something..

The warrenty ran out 2 months ago. After looking on Apple's site (http://www.apple.com/au/support/ipod/service/faq/), it is going to cost me $389.55 to get it replaced.. $10 less than it cost to buy it brand new.. a year ago...

Do I have any other (cheaper) options, or do I now have to make a video of me destroying a dead iPod? It only costs ~$150 to get it replaced if the battery is dead.. hmm..

I've had a similar problem where it kept just stopping at the apple logo, clunking, then resetting. This happened for a few days, and i couldn't work out why, as it'd been working fine before. I think I ended up plugging it into my PC and then rebooting the PC (this made the PC recognise the iPod and give the "do not disconnect" sign on the iPod's screen), and then installing the latest firmware and then using the restore utility to wipe it back to the factory settings. Sorry if my instructions are a bit vague, but it happened a while ago...all I know is that it *did* end up working again, so don't write yours off yet.

I haven't been able to get it to detect on my PC yet.. maybe I'll let it sit for a few days..

Thanks for your help, ReForce

Edit: I just got a "looking for hard drive" screen thing.. after resetting it a few times, I got a picture of a magnifying glass over a CD disc.. it just sat there. Does this mean that the disk is totally fux0red? It hasn't shown up a second time after I reset it more.. hmm..
