Default SN95G5 ..not posting

Was hoping to get some help with the SN95G5 i'm putting together for my brother.

Its version 3 ..so it should support the Venice core.

At the moment to reduce it down to the bare minimum I have in the box.
AMD 64 3000+ Venice.
Samsung DDR400 1G
Gigabyte 6600 Video Card.

It's not POSTing properly, the main fan whirs .....and nothing appears on the screen.

Its frustrating me because this is the most problematic and time consuming PC assemble I've ever done in that its not gone smooth.

Anyhow any help or tips would be great.

Check to make sure it is really a V3, as the first V3 I got was a 2.x. Check the corner of the motherboard for the FN95 Version no.

If it is a V2.x, they only officially support E6 processors.

Have you flashed the BIOS to the latest? Make sure it is the correct BIOS for the version, though. The instructions come up on the Shuttle site on how to check.

When it goes to boot, does it light a red light on the motherboard? This is caused by it detecting the ACP card wrongly.

Make sure you have unplugged it and reset the CMOS. This usually gets them going.

Let me know how you go..

Thanks for the reply.

That was one of the things I checked. The bottom has FN95V3.
I'm not really sure how i'd flash the BIOS to latest since I can't even post at the moment.

Dont see any red lights, just a green one on the motherboard.

I've unplugged and done the CMOS reset on the back of the computer.
I've unplugged and done the CMOS reset onthe motherboard.

I've swapped out the graphics card to an old TNT2 ..nothing.
The only thing I haven't swapped is the memory ..no spare.

Managed to even convince the place where I got the CPU to give me another replacement just in case.

This is the scenario at the moment. I dont even touch the power button on the front case.
As soon as I connect the power to the back of the shuttle it powers up the fans ..but nothing.

More ideas welcomed.

Powering up when you reconnect the power is what they do when the BIOS has been reset, so that looks OK. Green lights are also good. But if you cannot get any boot at all, it looks like it might be going back
I would check the memory, though.
P.S. an old TNT should have fired the red light on the motherboard, as it is not a 1.5V card.

I had reseated the CPU, I have never done this in my years of building PC's because generally I put it in and thats it. I never consider that is the problem. And it wasn't

Examined the pins. Nope nothing bent.

Anyhow to cut the story even shorter.

Today I bought a 512mb DDR 400mhz Veritech ...plugged it in. Reset the CMOS (just in case).

Powered up and prayed (fark I have never wanted a nightmare to be over so much).

Lo and behold it actually came on.
Was it the memory, I have no idea, My own machine is good, I need it for work so I dont have time to switch and see.

However I will say that it is probably the XPC being 'fussy' with the Samsung memory.

Thank you for all your advice ..with things going well, I will probably purchase the extra 512mb ..and put all the HDD back in and it will be good.

For those interested, the Gigabyte 6600 fits (just) it has rendered the PCI slot useless but the advantage is that it is passively cooled.

Good to hear.

I also thought long and hard about the passive Gigabyte 6600GT, but decided the extra cost, the loss of the PCI, interference with the DVD drive and possible heat issues weren't worth it.

I couldn't get the active Gigabyte, but got a Leadtek 6600GT instead. Nice and fast in Doom3

Anyone want a slightly used FX5900XT?
