Default Land of OZ shutting down for summer

Well after just coming home and finding all my temp warning alarms going off, plus a disgruntled team members leaving due to Intel bias, or what appears to be bias on Stanfords part, towards Intels. I have decided to shutdown for the summer period, something we have all done at LOZ and in our previous incarnations every year.

Although a fair bit earlier than most years (it's gonna be a warm summer me thinks), the Intel/AMD thing Stanford have going at the moment, and the loss of a major folder due to this and this early heat, has made the decision a bit easier for myself.

Some may have noticed that LOZ have been doing fairly poorly last few weeks? This was due to us losing a folder, a major blow to our output. We switched over to OCAU on the 29th of April 2005, in an effort to help stem the tide, when [h] took the lead. A few weeks after that OCAU retook the lead, so i guess our objective was met. In that time LOZ, produced 280 odd K of points. I hoped to get to 300k before shutting down for summer, but losing a folder made that not possible.

Have no fear, LOZ will return in the new year, hopefully (in my case anyway) with bigger and better machines. A major boxen upgrade is going to happen at the house of LOZ during this down time. Will be getting rid of the trusty socket A's for either, intel or AMD machines(depends on what F@H does in regards to WU types and what can get them).

Also on a personal note. Hopefully, come next folding time, I will be at my new abode, somewhere in the Brisbane River Valley area, that also has something other than dial up, but at the very least with A/C, so i maybe back folding before the heat is over in that case.

I'd also like to say how after a somewhat daunting time after ending our little teams effort and making the giant decision to start from scratch as a sub team for OCAU, that I have had a great time, watching the never ending battle betwen us and the [h]. Also the completely different feel of being part of a huge team, and not having to depend on just a few folders but a huge base of fellow dedicated folders who share in the spirit of helping his fellow man and also some healthy competition. I'd also like to thank the Horde, for making it, at times, a very exciting and somewhat stressful time, as the scores narrow, then widen. A truely giant struggle between giants. Surely in no other worthwhile cause is there such a contest?

I'll still be visiting here of course and on a very regular basis, and keeping my eye on the F@H world.

Good luck and all power to OCAU retaining the lead over our summer.

Alas, all machines Folding for me (bar two) are AthlonXPs -- it'll be a tough slog for them this summer, and I may lose them.

The other two are an Athlon64 and a Celeron Tualatin -- the former is apparently sitting at 60°C full load, and the latter I can't tell, so I may be down to only the 1Ghz Tualatin through the summer months.

Tell me about it. I cry when I read whats in some of the farms. My best is 1.9Mhz. Still, with christmas approaching, it's only 3 months till I more than double the farm. Don't you love teenagers always wanting new comps. Two borged P4's are in Taree, and I reckon they'll get shut down when nobody is using them . As a matter of fact, neither has produced points in a while. Time to say hi to the relos.

edited to add that the P4 on DSL has stopped, virus got in and he wiped a heap of stuff. I'll send instructions on how to get it going again.

I reckon you would if you were sitting in a room at 40c, in the middle of winter, with the windows wide open.

Datsun 1600.....replacing HSFs for Summer.

It's 10:50 at night, the ambient in the computer room/study is 25deg C and my CPU temp (with CPU running at 100%) is only 44deg C and I suspect it's going to get a good going over tomorrow (predicted temp is 35+)...

Now if I can get that water cooling going before summer really hits I should definitely be right...

The main reason, i have always stopped folding when the weather warms up, started as a thing to mollify the missus, and has kinda become a tradition.

I noticed if i stop folding for a few months, she becomes more inclined to let me spend a penny over summer on new machines/upgrades. Also the nice added bonus of cheaper electricity bills. She thinks anything i do with my "toys", is some useless enterprise that i have, so has to be of no real value. She can't concieve, that someone at home on a PC, would have any impact on real world events. But she's just a sheila

So for the long term view, and the rite to practise my mating skills on a regular basis, I shut down for a few months. Not real happy about it, and when i end folding for the season, i feel kinda lost for a few weeks. But it enables a more harmonious life style at home

Plus the fact this PC room of mine gets sunlight from dawn to dusk, and is a bitch in summer makes it all a very good reason to finish up folding for awhile.

We had a slight resurgence last week or so. I sweet talked 1 of our blokes to fire up F@H on his work Xeon(Destroyer_FF) again. And in celebration of this, I fired up all my machines for a short spell.

I had shut down all my AMD's after announcing that we were closing for summer, but had left my daily user (Intel 3.0 Prescott) to crunch on QMD's. It's so hard to go cold turkey from F@H

It wont last long for all the machines, but if the gods are kind, we should at the very least have the dual Xeon 3.2 folding away non stop over summer, slowly ticking away till we come back to folding next season.

OH! BTW we cracked 300k at the 1pm Standford update(25-10-05)
