Default fan cover on msi 7800gtx?

just got my msi 7800gtx, though im still waiting for other go fast bits to arrive (dfi lanparty sli-d full mboard, a64x2 3800 and mushkin high performance ram). just noticed after reading some more reviews that they dont have a cover like mine does. see here:

if i took the cover off, do you think i would get better cooling and hence overclocking performance?

it does look pretty though, but whos gonna see it anyway once its in the case, upside down...

I am thinking of getting this same card. Let us know what sort of speeds you get out of it if you decide to overclock.

Rift.

Ps. Taking off the sticker could affect your warranty. As could overclocking... if u tell them you did it .

actually it has D.O.T: dynamic overclocking technology, so i cant void it by overclocking it at is it will be overclocking itself.

the cover is just held on by screws, its actually a thin piece of metal with the sticker on top. underneath i can see the normal holes like the nvidia reference heatsinks have...

edit: pcstats did a review on the same model and has this pic: http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages...0GTX_front.jpg

actualy by taking the cover off the air is not forced ove the entirity of the heatblock and thus actualy will degrade oc performance because the entire heatsink does tot get as much airflow.

in this image it looks like theres no cover on "some of the" heatsink but actualy thats just plastic so ppl can see inside it.

theres a good reason why they have the cover on.

to put it simply it would be like raising your cpu fan 3cm from your cpu so some air escapes before being forced through the heatsink fins.

dont take the cover off. just take off the sticker and maybe mod the metal with some plastic cd case or something.

oh sweet, a definitive answer. thats a good explanation. just what i was looking for. no point in modding the cover though, as its just going in a super lanboy case and the cover wont be seen anway

thanks
