Ok folks, I'm in London right now (just left scotland) and I'm have a problem:

I'm staying above a nice little liquor store that specialises in local/single origin wines, ales, ciders and single malts.

I'd like to pick up some ardbeg I think, but also some other malts, and some aged tequila. I'm leaving london to europe (so not VAT refunds), then home via malaysia (so only 1L of spirits each allowed through there, but i have 2 people).

Duty free prices for ardbeg seem really high, 1L was $75 at ADL airport, $67 at KLIA, and here it is only about $74, even with duty and VAT! It was significantly more expensive in scotland! Laphraoig

So I'm thinking of getting 2 bottles here of something interesting, perhaps peat monster, caol ila, or something else (there are some malts I've never heard of, and some malt blends that are supposed to be very good) and then pick up some more at KLIA on the way home. I don't really want to spend more than $70 a bottle.

Any suggestions?

I'd go for a whacky but delicious blend, the trick as I see it is to find something that you would have to import yourself if you wanted it when you get home in addition to saving a few bucks.

Figure this one out - Nicks sells the Quarter Cask Laphroaig for $79 and the normal one for $89.

Dans has the normal one for $79 and the Quarter Cask for $99.

Yeah I'd say go with this approach. Something unusual that you can't get here. I did that a few years ago on a UK trip - with Monkey Shoulder (ha, now it's everywhere) and Glenfiddich Toasted Oak, which I've since spoken to 2 different Glenfiddich ambassadors who had never heard of it!

Cheers
Febs.

Default Jim Murray's 2012 Whisky bible on Android

Hi all, I just downloaded the 2012 Jim Murray's Whisky bible on my Android phone. It was $19.95 and, at a basic level, works well as a searchable version of the book with suggestions as you type etc.

It also includes videos, maps and other stuff. While some of the extended functionality has been a bit buggy here and there for me the basics work very well. Jim even makes a joke in one of the videos in the app about how he does the tasting not the programming. There are also lots of other videos etc.

Already looking forward to my next browse at the bottle shop and having the bible in my pocket.

Ardbeg Uigedeal (I think I spelt that right). Are you referring to Royal Mile? I used to just walk in and they either offer a tasting or give good advice on the rarer (nearly micro brewery type-esche) places that I found quite interesting.

Got a gift voucher for $50 and was going to get another bottle of Bowmore 12 y.o.this arvo, but saw Glenmorangie for $59 with the glasses.
The same bottle was $59 without the glasses, and as it was the last pack in the shop I thought I'd help Uncle Dan out. Yes, the glasses sucked me in.

I daresay I will get a thank you letter directly.

Not royal mile, all the whisky shops in edinburgh were very expensive! This is a little specialty shop southeast of london and is cheaper than duty free in Adelaide or edinburgh...

I ended up getting bunnahabhain, although not supposed to be that peaty it is the recommendation of the owner, and some dew of ben nevis (blend, similar to BNJ but cheaper) to drink while on the rest of my trip, I'll pick up ardbeg and laphroaig on the way home in KL unless I find some great deals at rome airport...
