Default PS2 steering wheel controller repairs - anyone tried it?

Many years ago when GT3 was just out, I won a Hyperdrive racing cockpit kit in a hot lap competition at radio rentals. The basis is a Seitek RX400 steering wheel and pedals on a frame with a seat. It's had a hard lift, between me using it in gt2 and gt3, and my kids jumping on it, and recently it's started playing up:

Basically after a short while of being on, it just stops working, all buttons etc work intermittantly for a few seconds, then nothing at all. It will last from booting the ps2, starting gt3 until about the first corner of the race....
I can pull it out, put in a dual shock controller and that works fine, and if I swap the steering wheel back in it will work again for a minute or so...

I pulled the cover off, there doesn't seem to be any thing special in it, it is basically a dualshock with the analogue sticks the pedal and steering wheel.
I'm thinking that something is heating up and a connection is dropping out, but there doesn't seem to be anything that could go wrong, it's just wiring and switches, nothing that would cause the whole controller to die.

anyone got any ideas?
