1) have you observed any radical jumps in battery level, for example One second it reads 95% and then a few seconds later 45%?
2) have you ever fully charged it, and then later turned it on to find that the charge is significantly below 100% (less than 90 would be significant)?

both those circumstances point to a malfunctioning battery, as it does not sufficiantly store its charge.

I believe that compaq is required to replace it under warrantee as the battery warrantee will usually be a year (or 3 months for really cheapskate companies) Just give them a call and they should mail you a free replacement battery

If neither of these things have happened then you have 4 other possible problems
1) your computer isnt running its correct power saving utils and drivers and is therefore it is sucking power like a drain.
2) your computer totally sucks for battery life, and it only survives for an hour, live with it
3) compaq shipped your laptop with a pissweak 4-cell lithium which only has a thousand or so mAH capacity, so you will need to go and buy a more expensive 8-cell battery
4) you have a cataclismic motherboard or other hardware failure that is shorting out the battery and thereby draining the power at a rapid rate. call compaq and get the computer looked at for warrantee repair

if its none of those, then i dunno

Could it be that the battery is brand new and would probably take a few charges / discharges to get the full life out of it?
