If this is just for a student/study related work and you'll be lugging it around.
I HIGHLY recommend nothing bigger than a 14" laptop.

Obviously from someone who hasn't experienced lugging a laptop around and to-and-from uni for a few years. I'm currently a final year student at UTS:IT and it's rare for any I.T student to be carrying around a large widescreen laptop. With the vast majority sticking to 12" or at the very most 14". Those that do go gung hoe with large widescreen laptops (does take the 'portable' part out of laptops I believe) had better live close by or they'll regret it.

It simply isn't needed for uni work.

ain't that the truth

we have sales reps who have laptops and company cars and they won't even take anything larger than 14" - I don't blame them

they much prefer the 12" slim units but we're not buying hundreds of slimlines just because they want them

Would you consider an ibook? No regrets here after buying one six months ago for uni, at the student discount rate (ibooks start at $1438). Office can be had for $99 student price and al other progs ive been able to download for free.

I would buy a 12" PowerBook, but it kinda sucks that they'll soon be superseded by an Intel-based version. It might be worth waiting for prices to drop.

Also, Centrino Duo based notebooks will hit the market within the next month or so too (some are already available). Suffice it to say, it's probably not the best time to be shopping for a new notebook!

If a secondary student and the school has a laptop program, go with the laptops they offer, makes it easier for both parties.

If a uni student as others have said, go with 12-14 inchers. Apple or IBM would be my choice if your looking to use it strictly for work, if you want gaming ability thats a whole different ball game

The only 12-incher I see is the PowerBook which is PowerPC-based not Intel-based.

My mistake, I think I should wake up before posting.

Give it a few months, or you can always try getting one second hand. A few have been for sale in the forums recently. I started with an ibok g3 and that convined me to use my tax return to get a g4. Best electronics purchase I've ever made.
