That sux!

I'm biased (i have a 9300), but as a gamer, i think i'd still go for the 9300, as from what i have read, dual core offers little advantage for gaming. Then buy a 1.7 400mhz fsb dothan, pin mod it to 2.26, grab a 7800go gtx for $530 from the states, and grab some extra ram, and you have a totally kick arse laptop!

The 7800 is so good, you could simply duct tape it to a microwave and it would get solid 60 fps in Quake4.

You know what I mean.

We were at the launch today and prepared a little launch guide with some previews of the models that will be hitting the market first:

We'll keep it updated as more info becomes available.

You could, but dell doesnt offer a discount. They get XP home licences for ~10USD a copy.

Im looking at getting this laptop, but holy shit at price, im not 100% sure that i want to pay that much at this stage.

After my modifications it comes to $3.7K, which is a fucking huge wad of money for me.

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but if anyone can answer some of the following questions about then many thanks.

How much does the accidental damage & theft cover? Basically if i spill beer on the laptop (which is fairly likely) will it be covered?

Does anyone know what HDD's they are using in this model?

Anyone know (or estimate) the battery life with either a 6cell or the 9cell battery?

Is the UXGA screen much better then the UGA Screen? It has some truelife propaganda word that i have never heard of. Because its about $188 which is also a fair chunk of money that i coudl do with (its like a good few days worth of drinking while at uni).

Anyone else know any other good gaming laptops they can suggest (just while im already asking lots of questions)?

My brother has the 6-cell battery in a 9300 he bought before Christmas. He barely gets 2-hrs on this battery and wished he purchased the 9-cell battery. He also got the UXGA. It looks sweet. His recommendation to me was to get the 7200rpm HDD. Compared to a regular 5400rpm laptop he has as well, there is a noticeable difference in access speed. Go with just the 60GB 7200rpm HDD and purchase an external 200GB USB2.0 HDD for your extra stuff.

I'm going to wait a little while until these laptops drop in price because it looks like there is a fair premium on these 9400's at the moment. As for alcohol, get yourself a homebrew kit for $40!

Seems like it's only 70 bucks or thereabouts ... probably not a bad option.

5400rpm standard ... my 100gigger is a fujitsu. I would recommend spending the extra for a 7200rpm upgrade.

3 hours on the 9 cell. $48 upgrade from the 6 cell.

You've got a choice of WXGA+ and WUXGA. The former is 1440x900 and the latter is 1920x1200 and comes with that TrueLife. In terms of resolution, you are looking at 100dpi vs 133dpi. Personally i find that 133dpi is way too small... everything looks tiny. You can make up for this to an extent by using large icons and fonts, but i think the best solution to a problem is to avoid the problem in the first place. There's plenty of real esate with 1440x900 and games will run better at that than they would trying to pump out 1920x1200.

All that Truelife is is some coating/film/whatever on the screen that makes it look all glossy and shiny. This makes the colours look all nice and vibrant but apparently glare on the screen can be a bit of a problem. If you go to Harvey Norman and check out the laptop range, you'll notice some screens have 'that glossy effect', like there is a pane of glass infront of the screen, and others look normal. I think it's just that.

Unless you want to spend up big on one of the specialist brands, not really. Toshiba have some nice rigs but they only come with 6600 Gos

trust me, 1920x1200 vs 1440v900, there is no choice, the 1920x1200 is way better, much clearer, and its true 1080p res, so you can watch hd movies etc in full HD
