Default Help with shuttle heatsink and athlon socket a

Just struggling a little with the following:

- an old xp 2400+ where the four circular pads are a little worn and seem to have shifted a little from original location on cpu

- shuttle ICE heatsink (found for example in XPC SK43G)

- copper shim provided by shuttle

Issue I have is that it has only posted once in fifteen initial attempts. I have disconnected cd-rom and HDD and isolated issue to CPU and heatsink installation.

On the one occasion it did post it correctly recognised cpu, RAM and temps for everything were about 34C and fan was spinning at the low speed. On all other occasions it did not post and fan did not slow down from the ultra speed indicating to me heatsink can't be fitted properly.

Problem I think I have is that shim does not fit around four pads correctly resulting in heatsink not sitting properly.

Any suggestions or recounts of similar experiences would be extremely welcome

The shim just helps avoid crushing the core when installing the ICE. If you are confident that you can install the ICE and tighten all four screws slowly and evenly, then don't install the shim. I don't have one in my SN45G....

Thanks Barney.

You're right about that shim getting in the way. You have to have everything lined up 110% to get it to post every time.

I succeeded eventually but today I'm going to replace the darned fan (high speed sunon) with an antec one (that I'll set to low or medium in bios) and I'll be very, very careful not to move the heatsink while I remove the fan.

Take it there's no harm ditching the fan grille and putting in rubber fan grommets instead of the screws at the same time.

Hoping I'll have an almost silent, fully functioning miniature raid 1 file server running clarkconnect by tonight
