Default Cheapie

Looking to spend less than 700 on a laptop, gonna be used for uni stuff, hopefully something higher than 400mhz and with more than 128mb ram and a decent sized HDD.

Please give your advice on particular models that are recommended (do not have major issues).

thanks!

See if those $999 Compaq laptop are still for sale at Officeworks / DSE / Harvey Norman etc. There was a $200 cashback as well, which brings the cost of the laptop down to $799.

Compaq Presario M2045
$995 with $200 cahback untill 5/2/06 (not 05 like the scan)
Available from Australia Post IIRC.

We also bought a 2417AU from DSE a few weeks back for $799 with free carry bag and plane power adaptor. Also got woolies discount on it.
The 2417AU doesnt have wireless though, so had to add that in, and put in another 512mb of ram while I was at it. Total came to about $900. Battery life is horrable though. Almost like Xp isnt scalling the processor back, and always running on the full 1800mhz.

For $700 bucks I'd be wanting MUCH better than a 400mhz/128MB RAM.

If you have the time, check out some auctions (Laptop section on eBay is terrible, too many stupid people paying over the top prices for shitty laptops), especially some of the traditional style ones. These are great, because you get big companies chucking out last years (or a few years old), fleet as theyre upgrading. This way these 30-40 of the same laptop there, and you can basically be garunteed to get one (or ten!!) at a good price.

For a point of reference, I bought 7 Compaq Armada M700's (Ranging from PIII-733 w/256MB RAM to 4 which were PIII-933 w/320-576MB RAM) for $200-$300 each. All came with chargers and 20GB Hard drives, all built happily running XP.

For something interesting, I sold 4 of them on eBay a few months later, 2 went for 500, one for 600, and another for 650.

And, to this day, I still use an M700 for my day to day laptop use (wouldn't mind an upgrade now though), but PIII-933 with 576MB RAM runs Windows XP perfectly. I wouldn't want to use photoshop or something on it, but it does the job.

The reason I didn't mention them is they're very city Specific.

But for Instance:

Perth:
Smith & Broughton - Midland - IT Auctions about once a month selling off big companies old goods (I got in after a Woodside throw out)
Ross's Salvage - Maylands - IT Auctions about once a fortnight, some good specials to be found (sometimes), although ross's is so popular, its often like eBay, too many people paying stupid prices.

Check out Gray's Auctions too, they've got online ones, as well as real ones in Queensland.

Possibly, it all depends though. As long as it was in good working order, it was decent for the price.
