I have 2 ibm thinkpads. One an old ibm thinkpad i series about 7 years old and still going. Had the cd rom drive replaced under warranty and had no problem. I now have a thinkpad t43 for about 7 months and it's great.

I choose ibm based on thier reputation to be reliable, well built and easy to deal with if you do need warranty work. The down side with ibm thinkpads is if you want to play some of today's games they are not the best, as thier graphic cards are more basic. Overall I rate them 8/10

IBM/Lenovo...

(1) Because they offer warranty schemes when your old notebook
is completely obsolete! (as in, you can buy warranty for old models).

(2) IBM officially supports Linux.
