Default laptop dvd drive - any work?

I have a older laptop i was given from work which wasn't working when i got it, and i managed to fix it with another stick of ram.

Its reasonabled spec'd, but it only has a cdrom, i'd like to add a dvd-rom or combo drive. Can I use any drive? are they all the same?
