Default Pics with the 70-300 IS USM on 350D

After just receiving my new lens from B&H, I thought I try it out on an unsuspecting Blue Wren.
I'm just a newbie to photography, but after reading half the local library on SLR photography, I have learnt that it is going to be a long haul to become even slightly proficient in this fantastic hobby, but I've got the bug now.

I would appreciate any comments on these first shots and if you can give pointers on ways that I could have improved them, that would be great.

I'm not into PP yet (that will come later, when I've learnt the basics of taking the photo's), but clues on better camera settings or composition would be welcome. These shots are straight out of the camera, resized of course.

Nice work.

I like number 3. Being able to see more of it's surroundings with the depth of field just right.

Only tip is to shoot at the beginning of the day or the late afternoon, can't see the pretty birdies eyes very well. Needs a highlight instead of being in shadow from it's head shape.

Great shots.

I just bought that lens last week for my wife, for Lunar New Year.

I read a number of reviews in which it was canned by professionals touting the L series lenses, but I thought it was perfectly adequate for amateur shooting, and you've confirmed it for me.

This amateur shot with that lens on a Canon EOS Rebel (digital), also helped convince me.
