I'm planning on buying a 30GB iPod Video in the next week or so and want to know what I'll need to use it as a temporary storage drive with my *ist DL.
Also, could anyone comment on what iPods are like as storage devices on the go. I mean what kind of transfer speeds and reliability should I be expecting here? Cheers!

They are slow (i.e. 20 mins for a full 512 meg card) but they work. I had a couple of hicups but I think it was because I kept bumping a button while it was in my bag downloading.

i havent used nor owned a late model iPod, but i do have a Gen3 iPod (the pure white with touchwheel)
i bought the Belkin Digital Camera Link and a separate USB2 card r/w, trouble is, the Belkin only supports USB, not USB2.. so it takes a few decades as a previous poster described. for a full 2GB CF card, it will take just a tad over 45-50minutes to dump. since the iPod Photo, Apple released its own dongle thing... never used one since theyre not compatible with my iPod so i cant verify speeds. so there are a TWO main options to you: the genuine Apple dongle, or the Belkin card reader (or the Belkin digicam link) Belkin costs a f*ckload (got mine for over $185) Apple should be <$90 iirc.. ideally, you SHOULD be taking a dump at a desk or something stable, rather than chuck in backpack and keep shooting. iPod HDDs are rather.. fragile and tend to crash very easily due to movement/shocks- mine always crashes if i take a step at the wrong time- just as it comes to change song in a big playlist. reliability-wise, ive never had a issue with mine. so long as iPod is well taken care of! but back on topic, last time i used iPod to dump was motorshow 2005.. sat down for lunch/dinner and let the gadgets do the magic whilst a small crowd gathered =] hope this helps in a way- depends which dongles you use and budget, etc Julz

I looked into this same thing as I am buying an ipod and dumper-dongle before i go to Canada in July.
Everything i have read from US forums or reviews seems to say that a 1gig card will take ages to dump, AND you should have a power supply handy for both camera and ipod. People were saying that they would be leaving them on there for a couple of hours to transfer 1 gig. Not sure how accurate that is, but I will be making sure I have a wall-power-cord for both my camera and my ipod when I go to Canada. |

I use the Belkin Media Reader and a 3rd Gen iPod; slow yeah but it does work and so far has been reliable. Does drain the batteries on the iPod if you plan on dumping full GBs of storage onto it though. You still need more than one CF to use though. For day shoots where you can stop for lunch before heading back to the hotel/home and dumping them back onto a laptop...I think this solution'd be ideal but for continous-bring-it-back-to-aus I think itd be better to go for the dedicated solution. |

but the TYPE of dongle/device wasnt listed- it could be the genuine Apple item that takes hours and hours. definitely my Belkin takes LESS than an hour to dump a full 2GB card... more like 45-50mins tops. and that's around 800photos. Julz

I'm currently in China for a holiday and amusing a 4th gen ipod with blekin card reader and am regretting it. Its damn slow (prob 25mins for 1 gb) and munches the ipod battery. And because it uses the dock connector, u can't charge it at the same time. (don't forget its spinning the HDD so uses more battery than justy music). And if you have an oldish ipod the battery is prob shitty too and will go even quicker.
Spend the moolah on a deciated photo drive and buy a cheap laptop HDD to use with it.

I never experienced issues with the iPod batteries, mind you, I made sure it was charged. I do remember once that it was around half charged when I started a 63 RAW photo transfer and it worked well. I'm not sure what the battery indicator meant when you're downloading the photos because I don't think it's the iPod battery. i.e. it was red when it had finished a download but when it finished, it was about 2/3rds full.
The reader batteries died once half way through a download. All I did was delete the roll and start again with full batteries.

I wish I could use the video iPod for portable photo storage. The new large screen is perfect for it. Alas, no device exists that lets me plug an SD card into the iPod and transfer the files across at a decent speed

Edit: Apologies for this in the apple forum (got here of front page and didn't look where i was).
I'm also looking at photo-dumping onto a hdd mp3 player, but I think i've decided on the X5L 30gig. It has usb2go, so i can just shove in a standard card reader and have photo's uploading while i keep walking/shooting, or just plug it straight into the camera. The L version boasts 35 hours of play life - not sure how well it goes for dumping files, but it has to be alright. USB2 as well. They aren't cheap, though. Apparently have great sound - and the 35 hours will help during any flights. I'm planning on london/europe! |

and yes, taking a dump chews thru batteries as the hdd is always spinning- thats why i always charge it up before i intend to use it as a dumping device, then charge again after if i want to do another dump later =] Julz
