Well a year back my PS2 went on a short car ride and since then it has been playing up. In racing games (bout the only game i play
) the cars dissapear, track and sky turns black and general crap on the screen. Sometimes are worse than others but usually it's unplayable. PS1 games are fine which made me think it could be the DVD lense but DVD movies are fine so that kinda threw that idea out the window. I don't really no whats wrong with it but wateva it is, would it prolly be worth fixing or not? Thanks Gierke |

which game is being troublesome?
have you tried any other PS2 DVD games? cleaning/fixing your laser as per this guide might help: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paed...ware/ps2.ars/1

Unless you have the chip to replace it, otherwise... yes, it's stuffed.

your best bet would be to take it to a computer swapmeet.
there are always console mod/fix stalls there and they can find out the problem and prob fix it there and then in front of you. |

Whatever you do, dont send it to sony, you'll have to pay around $200 before they will even take a look at it and thats after they have sent out a box which you have to pay for to send it back in, assavior said your best bet would be to go to your next swap meet nearby and get them to diagnose the problem on site
i spose it's worth fixing unless your getting ps3 or xbox 360.Joel |

In order I would:
1) Take it to any place that does repairs and/or modifications (usually the same people). Get a quote from them 2) Compare that quote to the cost of a second hand or reconditioned unit (usually $100-$150 for those, if you look around). If the quote is higher, then sell your busted unit on ebay. You'll get $10-$50 for a busted unit from people who are after spare parts, but BE NICE and make sure you advertise that it is broken. Then put that towards your new unit. If fixing it is just an $80 part, then go the fix. Whatever you do, you'll need someone who knows what they are doing to diagnose the issue. The PS2 uses a different laser as well as a different part of the PS2 (ie: the I/O controller which is essentially a PSone CPU) to run PSone games, so there are too many variables in your post above to diagnose it without opening the unit up and having a look. Although it does seem to indicate graphics corruption, which tends to be board/CPU based.

this happens when the ps2 cant stream data off the dvd fast enough.
usually happens when the laser is dirty or out of allignment. usually see it in racing games because you are moving very fast and the enviroment is being streamed off the disc constantly. |
