Having looked at the guitars and amps available on eBay over the last few days I can tell you that there is nothing worth getting that would be in a beginner's price range. Sorry.
![]() You'll probably want a strat copy and a 10 or 20W practice amp. That should get you started until you're prepared to buy something better later on.

I think the best way would be to go round to some local music shops and ask to tryout some guitars. Even if you dont know how to play anything still sit the guitar on your lap and see how it feels. Look at the height of the strings from the neck, the feel of the neck and the weight of the guitar. Maybe an acoustic could be an alternative. You could also go to a local pawn shop, just because a guitar is dirty and has chipped paint doesn't mean its crap. As for an amp try and get a second hand prac amp for $50-$100.
Also when you start off spend a couple of months with a guitar teacher. This will help you pick stuff up quicker + make more fun. Avoid ebay, go down to the music shops and talk with the guys they usually know what they are talking about. Good luck with it all |

As for guitars, I don't really have much of an idea about them, but I assume cheap ebay ones would be crap. How about going into a guitar shop or something and have a look at some and just see what the options are (doesn't mean you have to buy one straight away). |

a) buy an electric to learn on, they are easier to play (neck is smaller and they are easier to fret then acoustics).
b) dont spend a lot on your first guitar, until you decide its something you want to take serious and then go and splurge on a good setup. c) get 2nd hand gear because brand new is worth a mint, and everything is terrible resale value. d) go to a music store and play the two basic different types of guitars: - fender stratocaster - gibson les paul then pickup a cheap copy of the above. cheap guitar thru a good amp will sound better then a good amp with a cheap guitar, but for $300/pair i wouldnt expect you to be getting a good guitar or amp. if you spent $600 or so you could pickup a reasonable sized used valvestate marshall, and some sort of guitar which would sound quite good. when you do get the guitar, take it to a luthier (a guitar technician) and get them to set the action (as low as possible without fret buzz) and incantonation correctly and the guitar will sound and play a lot easier for a beginner. |

Ill be honest with you here, start on Acoustic, it builds finger strength, that or buy a tennis ball (great for watching TV).
