I currently own a BP6 (one CPU socket not working - any help appreciated) and am interested in getting a dual cpu system again when I upgrade.
At the moment I'm looking at the Tyan Tiger 760MP and potentiall two Athlon XP 1700+ CPUs. I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me answer: 1. Whats the difference between the Tyan MP and MPX boards? Is it just the onboard LAN and PCI slot differences? If not, what are the practical implications of any differences? 2. What success rate have people had with plonking two XP 1700+ CPUs in a Tiger 760MP? I have read of a few people doing so without problems. I'm not one to go modifying hardware to get stuff to work, so I'm consider my options now, since MP CPUs are much more expensive than XP's. Thanks for the help. |

AthlonXP processors definitely work in the Tyan Tiger 760MP motherboard - I've just had such a system put together for a friend, it works a treat.
You don't need to spend the extra money on the AthlonMP processors unless you specifically require AMD's support of your system running in dual-processor mode. Such as for mission critical servers at work. Home stuff, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll get plenty of support from other enthusiasts.

1. MP & MPX chipset differences :
- MPX supports 64/66 PCI - MPX USB is broken, although Tyan boards manufactured after April 1 may have this fixed. - Onboard LAN is available on both chipsets (K7 Thunder has onboard LAN, as does the TigerMPX). 2. XP success rate - Check my sig - works like a charm. You may also want to venture over to the 2CPU.com forums for more indepth discussions on the pros and cons of the various motherboards available. They might even have a solution for your defective BP6 socket.

MPX isn't a big deal to me, I have no 64/66 PCI cards anyways, and don't plan on getting any.
I like the original Tiger (I purchased it even though the MPX and Asus boards were available) because it has a proven track record. |

Thanks for the answers guys
![]() Just a few more questions is possible: 1. Dual Durons are obviously alot cheaper than dual Athlons, are they worth getting? Is their performance worth the cheaper cost compared to dual XP/MP CPUs? 2. I'm looking at Corsair ECC Registered 2100 DDR RAM. Whats the difference between 2100, 2700, and the other types? 3. What is a good power supply? I'm looking at the 420 (or the 470) Topower dual fan gold power supply. Is this worth getting, and if not what is? Thanks. |

Do you need athlons or will durons do for your uses?
I play games do email, and surfing, and run my business on this. I have no need to spend $1000 on Athlons when $250 worth of durons flys along, spend the money on a good video card (GF3 are good value now). The best part about all this is that you know you can upgrade your CPU's later to more than double the speed. Get the MPX for the same reason, you don't need 66/64 cards yet, but what about in two years? This is the cheapest computer you can possibly buy when you consider total cost of ownership, it will be like the BP6's many of them still chugging away perfectly well with 500Mhz Celerons in them, what a fantastic bargain they were - what other computer system from that era is still 'usable' today? The other thing to consider is the MPX has only one BIOS release (and 1 beta) at present, it is my bet that a BIOS update will also give us thoroughbred capability - how will that be? Up to about 3Ghz (or at least model 3000) chips? I bought this computer because it will last and move down the ranks till in 7 years time it is still chugging along perfectly well in a dark corner serving MP3s (or whatever format) |
