Default Difference between Megadrive 1 and 2

well its a mate's 18th on the weekend, and he loves his vintage gaming.

so me and a couple mates have mustered together $100, and because im the only guy who isnt totally incompetent, ive gotta go chasing around a SNES and a megadrive and some games for him.

doesnt help we've left it this late either because monday is a public holiday and postage from ebay will be a pain (although its only a public holiday in adelaide so it wouldnt be a problem, if, like, the auction ended today and the seller was willing to send before payment clears...)

anyway, in my search ive noticed that theres 2 versions of the megadrive - is there ANY difference between the two apart from looks?

and also, why are super nintendos so expensive

Well that's an excellent gift idea if he doesnt already have one and likes those sort of things

I think out of all those consoles i had in the early days I enjoyed the megadrive most!

haha yeah, it all started when another mate of mine brought his SNES over to his house and we spent all night playing it into the wee hours...of course we do that often with halo/halo2 but still, it was a different kind of fun

i still need to grab an SNES and some games - gametraders has $5 megadrive games though so that should be awesome

may as well change this thread into something a bit more meaningful - what games would you recommend for the two consoles to get (if i can get my hands on them) - so far, i will be getting sonic (possibly all 3), super mario allstars, and mario kart and donkey kong country (if i can find a copy for under $30, sheesh!)

heh just won it on ebay, havent picked it up yet, but the guy's in adelaide. depending on whether he'll let me pick it up or not i might incur up to $10 in postage, but i can handle that

EDIT - awesome he's delivering it to me tomorrow

this isnt going to be easy to let go of...

the games that comes with the pack are:
mortal kombat, target earth, columns, joe montanna football, NBA jam, saint sword, and some random japanese game.

i want to pick up golden axe for it, because i have good memories of that game invoked by that wikipedia article linked

also comes with 2 controllers, but theyre not original sega ones. shouldnt matter too much, as they'll be getting a good mashing (probably shouldnt say that in front of a vintage fighting games fan )

go the megadrive! I have 2 . When I was a kid I asked my uncle to buy me a megacd when he was passing through Singapore but the fool bought me another megadrive instead.

You have to pickup Sonic 1 and 2. Sonic 2 especially.. 2player mode in the halfpipe is da bomb. Streets of Rage series is a must too.

PS If you ever wanna sell NBA Jam , I'll buy it. I lent my copy to someone years ago and never got it back . I have so many good memories of that game.

Yep, Sonic 1,2 and 3 are must haves for any Megadrive owner. You simply can't have a Megadrive without Sonic.

Also see if you can find a copy of Toy Story. Very good game imo.

Streets of Rage I and II. Two of the most awesome scrolling beat 'em ups of all time, and an absolute must for any self-respecting MD owner.

I recently discovered Gaiares. It is one mean bastard of a shmup (shoot 'em up), and quite possibly now my favourite 16 bit shmup of all time. If you're into that genre, it's worth trying to track down.

well none of this is for me, and i dont reckon my mate will appreciate mounds of effort going into finding random games, so i wanted to stick with the obvious ones like sonic, mortal kombat, space harrier etc...

but you guys are tempting me to buy a megadrive for MYSELF now!

The second-hand market is goverend purely by demand. The more people want an item, the more it will sell for.

The SNES outsold the MegaDrive, and I'd assume more people remember playing a SNES at some stage, which probably means more people want to buy one when they think of retro consoles. Likewise, it had a much bigger games library, althouhg looking around on ebay all I ever see are the asme 5 titles for sale, so that doesn't count for much.

I picked up a second SNES console from ebay a few years back for only $15.

It's not just about the demand for items, its about the timing.

Now I'm trying to find a spare NES console so I have 2 at home but its a bit hard.
