Nah, this Sunday in the 2nd. Or the next Sunday is the second. But next Sunday is the 9th. As this Sunday is the 2nd. If you didn't have a this, then there wouldn't be a next. This implies the one coming up. Next implies the one after this. Capiche??

Last, this, and next. That's how it works. At least in my world anyway.

You oldies, I'd better watch myself otherwise you'll coming chasing after me in your gophers, shaking your walking sticks and zimmer frames at me!!!!

EDIT: See, even Agg agrees with me!!!

Last, this and next is of course correct. But 'this' Sunday is a special case.

This Sunday is only used in gramatically correct English when it actually _is_ Sunday, in which case the Sunday after the current Sunday is the next Sunday and if it isn't currently Sunday then it isn't this.

The way you are using it is to say "this sunday over there (in the future)" when what you should be saying is "that sunday over there (in the future)... yes the next one".

There you go... all fixed now

Hmmm, still doesn't make sense to me. If you say next Sunday, then how can it be the Sunday coming up??? If you said the next Sunday, then I'd agree, as the next Sunday is this Sunday coming up. Actually, I think I understand it, but I don't agree with it.

Meh, race finishes on the bloody 9th!! That should clear everything up

Yes but 'next sunday' is gramatically the same as 'the next sunday' because 'next sunday' is actually '(assumed and dropped over time 'the') next sunday'.

This Sunday is also 'This (assumed and dropped over time 'here') Sunday. You'll still hear small pockets of English speakers actually saying "This here" at times. It's still common in parts of the US for example where the full usage has persisted.

*strong hillbilly accent* No Dis 'ere 'ouse is mine, Dat next 'ouse is Jones's.

Confusing I know... but it is correct usage.

Yep, this is what I had assumed had happened - we have gotten slack over time, and dropped the 'the'. Couldn't one then argue that saying next Sunday, to imply this Sunday, is incorrect, and that we have just become slack? Should we be really saying "the next Sunday"?

So off topic, but meh......

You could argue that but I rather think that instead of saying it wrong we are writing it wrong it really should be ['next Sunday] (intentional apostrophe).

But the apostrophe police have gotten very slack these last couple of decades, and many words with trailing apostrophes and leading apostrophes have had them dropped. They are 'assumed' for grammatical purposes instead. Which leads to exactly the confusion we have here since there is no longer any indicator of which usage is correct in the word or phrase itself, and to determine that one has to look at the history of the word or phrase

Yah... we are off topic, but if the distributed folding thread can do it... LOL

Default Sunday Bloody Sunday

Honestly - the computer cycles you have wasted arguing about this next that some sunday... No wonder you all can't get it together and catch the monkey.
