Default Internet drops out for hours - D-Link DI524 Wireless Router

Hi everyone,

I recently installed a wireless network in my house, using the D-Link DI524 as my wireless router.

The network (with the exception of the internet) seems to work pretty well. I can access other computers etc.

The problem I am having is with the internet sharing. After a couple of hours of use, the wireless internet drops out for another couple of hours.

Now, at first I thought it might have been because the router was blocking the Telstra Heartbeat, but I know now that this is not the case because my desktop computer which is connected to the router via CAT5 always has access to the internet (i.e. has never dropped out)

It is the wireless laptop upstairs that seems to lose internet connection all the time. Mind you, it is only the internet, because I can still access other computers while the internet is down.

Does anyone know what might be the possible cause of this? I'm pretty sure I have the latest router firmware installed. It just seems strange that it is only the wireless internet that is affected.

do you have security (encryption) enabled on your AP? If not, somebody could be leeching through your connection and saturating your uplink speed. The same goes for if anyone in your network is using P2P apps, remember to throttle your uplink speed so that you don't saturate the connection and seem to lose the internet.

other than that, NFI...

Can you ping websites still? If not, can you ping IP addresses of websites? 203.220.0.228 is OCAU's IP address, or 66.102.7.147 is one of Googles. It may be a DNS problem.

I have a D-Link DI-624+ it does the same thing. Lately the computers connected with cables have been dropping out aswell. If I switch the router off at the wall then back on again it will usually fix the problem for a few hours. I have tried different firmware versions and played around with a few settings but nothing has worked. A friend has the same router with similar problems.

I have come to the conclusion the router is POS and im looking for a replacement.

I have to agree with you there, it is terrible that so many D-Link wireless products suck. Look for a Linksys WRT54G as replacement.

From your post only the Wifi seems to be affected. Download netstumbler and check for other networks in range with the same Channel. Run netstumbler and then select a channel on your router that is not in use eg channel 9 etc..

A common mistake people make with Wifi is that they turn off the SSID broadcast which triggers windows Zero configuration service to try to connect to other Wifi networks. Either turn SSID broadcast back on or turn Windows Zero configuration service off. Google it for a how to guide.

I've found with the di-634m's (i got 3 of them(home, office, partners place)). I gotta specifiy my own DNS (e.g. your ISP's DNS servers) instead of using DHCP and the routers DNS forwarder/server.

Since doing that, they run until a power outage without issues.
(also keep them well vented. one of them i use a small (60cm) fan to pass a little air over. they can run quite warm)
