Default Top Notebook Apps for Uni Students

What notebook apps have you guys found to be indispensible for use at Uni? (aside from the obvious, such as MS Word). Anything made your life significantly easier?

Can be freeware or paid-for.

Matlab, MS Project and LaTeX.

It's all going to depend on what course you do.

When it comes down to personal organization and events management (such as exams due dates and a todo list etc) you can't go past Rainy's Rainlendar.

It's awesomely simple to use, and you can get some pretty nifty transparency skins for it and what not. And it's freeware too.
