Default New To Laptops

Couple Of Questions..

I am looking at buying a laptop.

1. Is it possible to ake your own laptop (as is with desktops) or to change things like Ram, Hard drives and graphics cards.

2. What are some good laptops for gameing.. like CSS and F.E.A.R etc.

3. Laptop companies. other than dell and alienware who can i look for to make a "custom" laptop with user defined specs.. (yes i know Dell and alienware are merging)

1. Yes, but they are generic brands, that im not quite sure you can get in australia, and plus, dell, alienware etc brands are good enough with customizability anyway

2. Alienware, albeit overpriced, Dell, xps2 if you can find one. this thread might be useful: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...8&page=1&pp=15

3. Dell, Alienware, and a couple of others mentioned in that thread. also, dell and alienware arent merging as such, alienware is still going to function as they are.

1) I have an acer laptop and I can definately change the RAM (it's a SO-DIMM module, so different to PC's), the HDD and I don't think I can do the graphics as it's onboard.

2) Funnily enough, Acer do some good gaming laptops. I think most companies that produce laptops do. Bear in mind, you will pay a premium for them.

3) Good luck. A lot of them have integrated everything, so the specs won't change much. I think ASUS and BenQ may have highly configurable laptops.

Just remember most laptop HDD's are pretty slow - usualy 4800rpm vs the 7200rpm that most desktops have. this really irks me when loading BF2.

I don't know about the cheapest. Try this link for the ASUS ones

High performance 5,400 and 7,200 rpm drives are not that much slower than average desktop drives.

That's true. But how many laptops come with these as standard?

It's very easy to upgrade the cd/dvd drives, hard drive, ram and battery, but it's usually impossible to change the video card.

btw, Dell and Alienware aren't merging. It was just a rumour that Dell shot down pretty quickly.

Try www.itbox.com.au. They assemble laptops based off barebones kits (so you can customize to your heart's content), have prices that are quite reasonable, and know what they're talking about (I was being very fussy with the sales guy over my build). Look forward to actually receiving it next week.
