Best chicken kebabs I've ever had are easily the ones from Kebab Cafe next to Swinburne Hawthorn. I'm generally a lamb guy, I find chicken kebabs are usually fairly bland, but these are just stellar.

-Doner kebabs which are basically meat, salad and sauce wrapped in flat bread. -Shish kebab which you mentioned above, meat on a stick with vegetables. -Chelow kebab, a persian variant of kebab which is basically minced meat prepared with herbs and butter and served with rice and a grilled tomato. (My favourite ).

What makes a kebab special is the freshness of the lettuce, onion and tomatoes, how well the meat is cooked (soft-med hard and tender), fresh un-wet bread, and last but not least a well made garlic sauce to top it all off.

any1 ever tried an open souva? its pretty much normal souva ingrediants with a much thicker bread(usually hot), feels like a meal.
My fav used to be from a guy at dandy market, made really nice kebabs using lebo bread which is less filling but i think tastier than turkish bread. |

Another vote for Souvlaki King in Brunswick St. The Age Good Food Guide voted them the best in Melbourne, and so far I have to agree.
The place in the Southbank foodcourt is quite good as well.

Can't really argue with the Souva King crowd... also think Stalactites is not too bad...
I use to live down the road from the Kebab van that use to be at the servo near Royal Childrens... we'd go there sometimes... he was affectionately known as 'Kebab Man' to us and we had a shrine at our house of the media coverage he had from when David King from the Nth Melbourne Footy Club assaulted him when he stole a hotdog (or something) ahhaha

Always enjoyed the big kebabs from some place in Northcote Plaza, they sold home made flat breads too IIRC.

Kebab Station on sydney road near bell street.
They are the definition of perfection. The fact that they bake their own kebab bread on site throughout the day just makes it all the better. The bread is warm, soft and yummy. Heck even just buying the bread on a saturday morning and ripping chunks out of it is divine. i'm hungry, and I just ate dinner

the best one has to be the little place at the bottom of the broadway arcade, dangerously right across from KK's. GOLD! |

I also consider myself quite the connoisseur of this fine cuisine.
Am tending more towards the souva these days as the turkish bread in kebabs is usually a bit much for my liking. Did I mention that I almost exclusively have chicken rather than lamb? Souvlaki King is a favourite as is Stalactites. I also rate lambs in Northcote as pretty good too.
