Default Discussion - when will the first xbox360 price drops come ?

So far we are looking at a $650 RRP, Most stores seem to be selling at that price.

Im a bit of a spend thrift and Id like to wait for a price drop before I purchase mine.

Unlike the original xbox release it really has nothing to compete with, unless Sony start selling the ps2 at a rock bottom price ($100).

So what do you guys think ?, a overall price drop this year ?, or maybe a deal from the bigger chains like Kmart/target.

I wouldn't expect any major price drops until the end of the year.

When you see the Revolution/PS3 hit the scene is when Microsoft will start to push the price down... until then... they have no need to.

Yeah, it wont happen till revolution and ps3 hit the scene.

can you imagine xbox 350 having 100 games and being half the price of ps3 when it launches? a likely scenario.

Don't expect a price drop any time soon.

MS is already making a loss with the console.

I wonder what specs the xbox 350 would have if Microsoft decided to bring that out?

Easy to predict.

Month of October, strong marketing campaign to drop the Xbox 360 price.
This is to entice those holding back because of the initial price.
Which will coincide with the PS3 launch in November (not hard there).

PS3 will then be forced to drop its price a few weeks into its release.

Then when Nintendos come online, both Sony/MS will do a price drop.

Makes those intending on buying a Nintendo to seriously think about it if for 'an' extra $100? or $150 you can get the 360 or PS3. (I speculate on the final pricing )

Nintendo may be out first... however I dont think MS will drop the price for that as much as they would for the PS3

I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that the Revolution WILL be under $300 max on release.

Thier target price is $149 US (or $199 AUD) on release... but its uncertain if they will achieve that initially.

i dont really think MS will hugely drop the price of the 360 with the ps3 release.. BUT since i think they are going to release halo3 to coincide with ps3 they may put it in a pack with perhaps another controller?

actually, they did mention their desire to make a pack instead of a price cut, which has its merits.

Can't remember where i read that though

I saw a website (the url escapes me, it was a few months ago) where microsoft said they were making money on each console they sell.

The website was lying. Microsoft have lost money on both the Xbox and Xbox 360. In fact, even with game sales the whole Xbox phenomenan left them in the red due to the sheer volume of Xboxes purchased by people soleley with the intent of modding into home entertainment machines.

Why do you think the RRP of 360 titles is so high?

Because developers are greedy and are testing the waters of the next generation of what people are willing to pay?

If you look at the games that are most expensive, see: EA, you'll notice that this has absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft. Personally I wont pay over 100 bucks for a game, hence I only grabbed Fight Night Round 3 and Burnout Revenge when they were 75 bucks at JBHifi and not at the full $120 complete ripoff of a retail price.

-edit- But yes, the original Xbox didnt turn a profit until very late in it's life - another reason being all the bullshit Microsoft went through licensing the parts from different manufacturers (Intel, Nvidia, etc) whereas this time around they're doing all the manufacturing themselves instead of putting together a PC in a (not so) small box.
