Default Asus W3 series?

Hi guys,

Been surfing around and seems W3 is prety good allrounder, good balance of warrenty, power, graphics, size, screen. Kinda good all round...

I am just worried about the heat? anyone have one? what temps do you run at what ambient?

Also W3J is coming out apparently, with duo core... will this heat up even more???? intuitively it should but..................

Thanx in adv

The hand rest does no heat up, and the side vent is warm

pretty much like every laptop

and the heat will not be to the extent that it will break

yeah.... i dont mean so hot it melts the plastic but... if its too hot ... esp brisbane summer.... it might start to throttle down secondary to heat..... i hope thats not the case... thats all

the M5 (thin thin one) is pretty damn hot.... thats why was wondering if w3 is the same.... although larger and thicker.... but duo core and more powerful vid card.. and faster hdd?? ..... you know..

thanx tho

i found most of the heat on mine comes from the hard disk (under palm rest on the right) which doesn't have any fan cooling. I do find it quite warm when sitting on desk or lap as no air circulation underneath. So I always sit it up on a stand & use external 2nd hd instead of internal as that will just heat up the other side of palm rest.

Anyway, good stable machine with good performance-weight ratio. Will ungrade to W3J whenever it comes out...

hey dhon,

thanx for your insight.... why you wana go w3j? not much diff right other than cpu power? wouldnt it be even warmer? i know you said hdd but if the ambient inside the lappie is higher wouldnt that make the w3j even warmer?

or are the current w3s really that slow?

The ASUS W3J does look impressive...

This is another notebook I'm considering along with the MacBook Pro, Toshiba and Lenovo...

It is fast enough for most use but I do heavy development work & need all the power I can get without losing mobility.

Initially bottleneck was with hdd so got the 3.5" 7200rpm & "adapted" it to the 2nd ide channel (modular bay). Also ram that came with w3v was only DDR2 PC3200 instead of PC4300.

W3J won't make the compiler go that much faster but at least I can do something else while it is doing its hour long compile. Also the system is distributed so should speed up testing as well.

When we finally ported the system to 64bit, then Merom here I come...(or AMD Turionx2?)

BTW, the chassis does have problems with colour/paint fading/chipping. So don't expect it to look new after extended use, unless you "workaround" the issue by using external keyboard/protector film etc.

it was the W3V.

3.5" is connected as external. got the original idea from someone who did the same for mini Mac.

here is my post in notebook review forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...t=45558&page=2

there are a lot more feedback re. W3V on the same forum, though I found some are a bit "fanatical" about the machine...

I haven't actually seen a W3 in real life, just on the net and from that it seems that the main body is about the same. I imagine that the w3j might have ports in different locations to other w3 series...

As far as when they will be available, it is hard to say. Synnex told me the other day end of April early May.

I'm pretty keen on the W3J due to the design and specs especially now that I have seen a MacBook Pro in real life.
