Well ALL my icons (from the quick launch bar and the start up menu) seems to be missing ... now it shows up as the default white application window with the blue title bar etc.
anyway of fixing this , or must i have to format my computer again which is a real pain in the ass

you could download icon files off the internet which could be hard to find but i would just format and re-install

Download TweakUI, it has an icon fixer/rebuilder.

Did you do/install anything just before they disappeared?
Do the shortcuts still work when you click on them? It sounds to me like the computer has had trouble finding your personal settings and logged you on as a default user. Try looking in Documents and Settings for your login name, or the Administrator login, and have a look at the Desktop folder for your icons. eg: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop If they are there you may have to look at your settings in: Control Panel > Accessibility Options |
