I'm surprised by the number of NT based servers here.

At home, no server, no need.

At work, 1 x 2kserver, 2 x 2k3 servers (one running exchange, other sql) and a fedora 4 squid proxy / mail filter (assp - awesome awesome software)

We run WinXP pro.

Its only a file server, and as such doesnt need the security of Linux. Much easier to set up the drives when the server runs the same OS as the rest of the network, no fucking around with SAMBA.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server - It's like Debian with up-to-date packages.

Smoothwall on one network, as it has easy to use dialup support (for parents who live in the sticks)

pfSense on my other network to handle dual WAN connections (mmm, telstra cable and 1500 unlimted dsl)

All my computers run Gentoo Linux. Servers, desktop, notebooks.

blastm@blastzilla ~ $ uname -a
Linux blastzilla 2.6.16-gentoo-r7 #4 SMP Wed May 10 15:31:07 EST 2006 x86_64 Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz GNU/Linux

Mmmm... 64-bit dual core optimisation of every program on the system!

I'm a gentoo user myself, but I still get a chuckle out of statements like that.

Queue obligatory "gentoo is rice" URL.

Intel's ICC builds faster binaries than GCC ever could hope for. If you're after real speed, shell out for a copy of that instead. Actually... I wonder if anyone's built Gentoo/BSD from the ground up with ICC?

[edit] yup

I'm guessing it won't work with distcc though.

distcc is merely a compiler front end. Read the distcc mailing lists - there's a lot of work being done to support non-GCC compilers, including ICC.

But regardless: the main benefit of Gentoo is its customisability via USE flags. Stop worrying so much about "fully optimised performance", as realistically you're only looking at a 1-2% across the board gain compared to any other i686 distro. Tests have been done to show Mandrake/Mandriva Linux beating Gentoo in certain instances thanks to it's default prelinking behaviour. You won't find me using Mandriva in a pink fit however, simply because I need greater control over my operating system and the choices it makes when installing packages in application-specific environments.

I know here on OCAU everyone is tweak/optimise/benchmark mad, but sometimes it's not the be all and end all.

"Linux Other" and "BSD" are there. That covers all the useful *nixes. Nobody in their right mind uses UNIX any more.

I run FreeBSD 6.0 on my server (ye olde faithful amd k6-2 400 with 192mb pc133 ram) - it's mainly a firewall / torrent machine / test web server.

Oh and for running authpf for authenticating WLAN users.

Setting up the toolchain with ICC across all my compiling boxen will be a pain in the arse if it is possible.

And yeah the use flags on my server are pretty much -this and -that. X doesn't belong on a server!

two 2k3 servers here at work, one is a domain controller and one is a webserver. webserver needs to be windows (unfortunatly) because of the silly .NET developers downstairs.. It also runs WSUS. I am putting in a linux server for other web/ftp/dns/etc
also an old 2000 adv server which the 2k3 webserver box is replacing

edit: at home i have a fc3 server (really need to change this but dont have time) running on 2nd machine in sig, also smoothwall running on a ever faithful k6-2 400@366 (underclocked! stupid motherboard) with 192mb ram in a beautiful beige AT case
