Default PS2 Gun with a Plasma TV?

Hi guys,

I just got some Gun games for the PS2, but only have plasma TVs now. Will the G-con2 Gun work on Plasmas?

Any other guns for the PS2 that works?

Thanks in advanced.

I don't believe they will as they rely on the way a CRT TV redraws the screen to calculate where on the screen you were pointing at....

The normal Gcon2 will not work. However, there are new guns that do not rely on CRT technology to operate. Like this one from Lik-Sang

They are local in Australia too, if you are weary about doing overseas purchase

Just got one of these today. It comes with 2 pieces of plastics with LEDS about 45cm long.

The gun itself is pretty nifty. Even has Laser sight on/off for those of you who can't hit the wide side of a barn with a shotgun The gun has a recoil too. Turbo normal mode etc. Fairly light and doesn't feel very robust actually. But that remains to be seen. Will try it out tonight with my plasma screen and MAME PC to see if it works properly. It also has XBOX connectors too.

The Taiwanese manufacturer of that gun had some videos on their site a while back showing off someone using the gun with a projector.

3 meter wide House of the Dead / Virtua Cop / Time Crisis anyone? Sounds bloody tasty to me!

Gun doesnt seem to function properly with Plasma screen. According to manufacturer's website, if large infra-red (heat emitting) source is nearby like if you have the sun behind, a reflection etc it can stop it from working properly... hence using a plasma screen which generate a fair amount of heat may not work properly. Will try again tonight to see if i get any luck. Basically the buttons all work fine. But can't do anything with it.

Tried positioning the sensors in different spots around the screen?

Say, above/below instead of left/right. A simple recalibration should fix the directional movements.

That's where the problem lies. I can't calibrate it. The first step of the calibration is to shoot the top left sensor. The sensor wont pick up the gun unless i'm shooting it from about 1 foot away.

You can use it on a projector?! But how does the sensor etc sit? Do you just glue it to the wall or something.

Yup. In the case of a projector screen, you have to find some way of placing it on the front of the screen because it doesn't support over a certain size.

What you're saying is that the heat generated by your plasma interferes with the infra-red detection of the unit.

What I'm saying is move the sensors to different points and try again (eg: instead of putting them on the left and right of the TV, try above and below). If it solves your heat interference issue, you'll be able to recalibrate too.

The sensors are meant to be placed Vertically only on the side of the screen and there are 2 of them. They need to have the proper orientation for the calibration to work. These guns does not rely on the feedback from the screen and they have no passthrough cable for the screens. They only use 2 USB/XBOX plugs and nothing else.

By placing them under or away from the screen means the calibration is wrong to begin with.

Heh. While I appreciate the simplification effort, I completely understand exactly how traditional scan-line reading lightguns work, how these infra-red-reading guns work, and what your current setup problem is. I've been around this technology for a long time, and have built many arcade and home console setups based on this sort of thing for well over two decades now.

Can I ask you a question? Have you actually TRIED placing the sensors horizontally above/below the TV?

Doing so would make your guns obviously work 90 degrees out of whack (ie: moving up would be sensed as moving right, etc). What I'm trying to suggest is you do ANYTHING to attempt moving the sensors away from the hottest part of the Plasma and see if you get ANY signal, compared to what you are getting now (ie: nothing past ~30cm from the screen).

Worry first about getting a signal at all. Once you've done that, then worry about calibration issues. Baby steps are the key to problem solving.
