Default Capturing DV on a laptop

HI All

I've been looking at sub $1500 laptops lately. Most of them seem to have a firewire plug in them. How would they go capturing DV? Most have 4200 rpm hard drives.

I've been looking at getting a $1k laptop & putting extra memory in. Would I be better off capturing to an external hard drive attatched to the laptop, or would the internal be sufficient?

Thanks!

EDIT: I should mention that any editing will be done on my desktop A64 - this will be mainly used with DV for when I go away on any trips
