Default Ipaq 3870 problem

The problem is :

When the ipaq was first obtained, it had a broken battery cable. A lot of effort later, this cable arrived today and i installed it and expected it to work magically.

Problem is it doesnt.

The battery operating voltage is 3-4.2 volts. After pulling off the sticker covering it, the battery appears fully charged at 4.2 volts on my multimeter. When the cable is installed, the power management in the ipaq itself reports the Battery Power Remaining is 100%, and the little yellow charging light on the front of the Ipaq glows solid yellow.

When the cable is removed, no battery meter appears in the power management utility at all. Testing the tiny contacts on the cable is difficult and im not sure i've managed to do it properly- need another pair of hands since its so darn fiddly.

According to this, my ipaq is fully charged and ready to go. (The battery is brand new supposedly).

However when i take it off the cradle, it goes dead. I.e., no power actually comes from the battery at ANY time. So what must be broken? There doesnt appear to be any visible damage to the socket of either the battery or the mainboard, and the Ipaq functions perfectly in every other regard, except for this crazily annoying fault.

(either the battery...or the cable... or the mainboard... gawd i hope its not the mainboard)...

Hi, I think you will find, as I have, that the 22 pin connector on the bum, is broken away from the SWICH BOARD, they are quite easily dismantled,
the small 22p plug in the metal housing, has 22 gold pins that are SPUPPOSELY SOLDERED TO THE MAIN SWITCH BOARD, in my case the thing looked like it was never soldered, you can try and re tin and solder, but mine doesn't like going mobile with a Navman charge adaptor in it, as it moves and resets and does all silly things,
very piss weak arrangement in my opinion,
one side of the 22p board (4 pins together) carry the voltage, 3 earths are scattere thru the rest of the pins, if an EARTH or the 4 Voltage pins come adrift, what you are seeing is what happens, not enough current carrying ability to over come internal capacitance of the battery to display correct readings

hope this helps, then again, your prob may be different
