Does anyone know if there is a modchip available for the xbox 360 yet?
(I used the search function...) |

There is a firmware hack around that does nothing more than allow pirated games. Running unsigned code like the old Xbox that allowed things like Media Center is still a no-go on the 360. |

There are some modchips just hitting the market apparently, but all they are just doing exactly what the firmware flash does. The only difference is u will be able to switch baack to nrmal firmware if u wanna go on live.

yeah.. the modchips are for the dvd drive mainly... nothing else has been mentioned as yet...
its just another option instead of flashing firmware back and forth...

the available modchips now, are only related to reading and writing data to the xbox ODD/HDD. there won't be a modchip like the xbox/gc/ps2/psp/ds, because they deliberately embedded a lot of the loader features and key exchange security inside unique chipsets, making them hard to replace with cheap hardware.
there are a bunch of backup utilities similar to the XSATA for accessing the data (and FW) from the original 360 DVD's so you can make backups for a modified 360 drive, most are still WIP. the Datel XSATA is the first real mod, a SATA bypass/extension that sits between the 360 and the 2.5" HDD so you can access the drive without unplugging it. not very useful since you can't get software to run on the 360, you cant really add video or music unless you change/overwrite the XBLM downloaded content and you can't decrypt XBLM downloads yet, but it is good for savegame swaps/backups. still a modchip, but not very useful because of the 360's internal security measures. the 1st gen 360 ODD modchips (coming soon) are really just FW bypasses like the original XBOX modchips, only able to switch between original and a modified backup-playable DVD-FW. it will play 360 and xbox backups in the drive, it won't play region coded games or unsigned executables. the devil360 and NME360 are among a few groups trying to sell a piggybacking FW that autoswitches between firmwares for the two kinds of optical drives. the big hassle is that nobody has been able to run unsigned software in the immediate future, or how MS will deal with the FW hacks that will come out. wether or not they start proactively banning users from XBL or if they actually can remotely detect a modified firmware depends. someone still has to code a firmware flash reader/writer using the 360 SDK, or build an entire 360 OS core feature to be able to access the DVD firmware on multiple drives, so there's no rush. if it took them 6+ months to code a download manager, it might take them 6 years to start banning users from XBL for modded firmware. it depends on the mindset, leaving a loophole is the best way to get people interested in breaking your system so you can charge them twice and also be seen to enforce principles.
