Currently running a PIII650 chip in my Compaq Presario 1200 (model 12XL212)
I've got a PIII1000 chip lying around, same configuration but the voltage is slightly higher. The 650 chip is 1.6-1.65v and the 1000 chip is 1.7v I think someone said they tried it and it just got hot. Is there anything technical to base some answers on?? :O Thanks

Afaik it shouldn't make a difference since the bios should auto select voltage.
Either it will work or it won't, depends on BIOS, no harm in trying I guess.

It's probably not such a great idea, since the 1Ghz one will produce a lot more heat than the 650Mhz one (and the cooling system was probably designed to deal with the 650Mhz one).
There's also a chance that the BIOS just won't detect it. Either way, running it for a little while shouldn't do any damage. Just keep an eye on the temperatures if it does work.

What's the best way to keep an eye on the temps of the cpu with a lappy?
Can't remember if there's anything to monitor it in those old lappies. I'll clean up the stock paste on the heatsink panel and replace it with some AS lying around. I've got a more junkier version of the same laptop lying around, same model as mine but missing HDD, screen and other things. Mobo is still solid though, I'll shove an external screen/keyboard on it and use it to safely test the 1gz. Would an upgrade such as this drain the battery far more quickly? or just a little bit more. Is it even worth the heat risk for a 53% increase in cpu speed? heh, that sounds like a lot when I put it into a percentage.

Laps usually works well to compare laptop temps
Wear shorts while testing ![]() Faster generally means lower battery life. I would still expect lower battery life even if the faster CPU you have there has better power management.
