Default Online Petition for an EPG:

Below is email from my father he asked me to past on to anyone i might think will sign it...

Quote:
Hi all,

If you want a decent EPG for Australia, and you do, even if you don't know
that you do, please go to this link .............

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/EPG_OZ/

and "sign" the petition.

You only need put a first name and e-mail address, and if you want you can
even tick the "Anonymous" box and nothing will show.

After you have signed the petition you will be asked to make a small
donation, there is **NO NEED** to do this, your vote is already recorded,
just press the "Back" button on your browser to see the results.

I only send one or two "spams" a year, so if you could spare a minute of
your time for this cause I'd really appreciate it !!!

Trust me, even if you don't really know what this means, it's something that
really needs your support !!!

Thanks,

Austen.
(EPG=Electronic Program Guide)
Rhys

EDIT:->maybe for shits and giggles include 'ocau' in the comments if you do sign...

I'm confused and probably in need of a little education in this area, but what sort of program guides? Like teletext where you can see online program information?

that guy (jrobbo) who makes epgs for WS does by scraping the ninemsn website for data.

ninemsn are already sueing icetv for providing an epg, stating its aiding piracy.
ninemsn also keep changing their site which keeps breaking the scrappers every couple of days.

bullshit it is! networks can't even provide a free EPG to go with their service

an epg should be a full 7 day program guide for all channels. so you can automatically setup recordings on your pvr/htpc if need be.

Is there also going to be a petition (almost typed partition ) to make the networks start and finish their programs on time so that an EPG would actually be useful for timer recordings?

I see. I use IceTV as a program guide on the PC. Seems (maybe?) all a bit pointless given that due to the new legislation that will allow personal recording of TV shows. And why should people just have to look at physical guides in this day and age!? Pfft.

I think it has more to do with greedy broadcasters like Nine not figuring out how to make a profit from the scrapers. If you're scraping the service, you're not visiting he site and seeing all those ads that nineMSN is selling. They're also pissed off that a company like IceTV has been able to implement an EPG and profit from it by what they argue is their IP (their program listings).

If they were smart they'd set up in competition to IceTV and either offer the service free or at a reduced rate - it's not like they need the revenue. Hell, they could even set up an EPG with advertising support. I personally wouldn't care if my MCE guide had a banner ad for Carpoint or something across the top as long as I was sure that the EPG info was right and I wasn't going to miss the last 5 minutes of 24.

Personally I don't use any EPG. Because the one that my STB gets is a pile of shit. Just get the Green Guide every Thursday in the Age.
