(I tried to search CD players, but can't search "CD")
I'm currently running my CDs through a higher end sony discman, but the old unit is starting to give up the ghost. I'm using a modded xbox for DVD duties (it plays region free) and for streaming MP3s/DivX off computer. Currently using a Yamaha reciever, but i think i might be getting my hands on a dedicate "hi-fi" amp for music use. So I need something to play CDs with. I like my music, and am slowly piecing together a nice-ish system. But I'm also on a very low budget. I'm happy to go secondhand, but i have no idea about the products out there. Is it sensible to assume that $100-200 spent on a dedicated CD player is going to be better than $100-200 on a DVD playing CDs? edit: IS something like this or this 2 going to be convincingly better than a cheap LG DVD player?

I don't have a DVD player - jsut the xbox.
I meant to ask whether there will be difference in sounds quality between (for instance) an older higher-range CD player or a low range new DVD player.

It really depends on the new DVD player, I think there was a Toshiabe DVD player that had a very nice stereo line-out. Can't think of the model atm :P But I'm kinda leaning towards the older higher-range CD player for good stereo sound quality.

I had the same question myself Andres.
In some basic RMAA testing, my 10 year old denon cd player with sig-delta 20bit dac (olschool!) still measures better than the yumcha DVD player I have here for analogue out, despite yumcha dvd player having reasonable BB dacs, (note reasonable), the output opamps and filtering is shit, plus the crappy switchmode supply and poor filtering = poor jitter no doubt. IIRC The biggest offender was horrible IM distortion, THD was about the same, can't remember noise and dynamic range. Both were worse than the EM-U 404 in loopback (the card used for test) So in short, chances are, technically yes an older decend CD player should be better. Going on listening tests alone, I felt the same way, but am not a fan of listening tests, especially with sources as they contribute little to SQ compared with the rest of the sys. I should set them up again and do a blind test

I would go with the dedicated CD player as well.
Take a look at this. Provided the bid price does not go too high, this old CD player will absolutely slay new new cheapy DVD players.
