Default Dell Theft Protection

Hi,

My house got broken into and my Spec'd up Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop got stolen. Along with my LCD TV, Xbox 360, DVD players etc... the list goes on really...

Unfortunately my contents insurance might not cover the laptop, however I have contacted Dell in relation to it as it came with 3 years Theft protection. So i have to provide photos of the forced breakin (which i have) and the police report (which i have the number for etc...). Once i send this to dell, they then investigate it.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever been through this process or know anyone who has? I am just concerned that they will replace it with a crappy one with have the specs of the one i got?

The one i had, included upgraded ram to 2g etc... So the only replacement i can assume would be the new XPS with 2G Ram with same warranty etc as my old one did?

Thanks
T

I don't see why they'd replace your Inspiron 9400 with an XPS - why wouldn't they just give you another Inspiron 9400?

The laptop will probably be replaced by one with the same configuration that yours had when you bought it (if you upgraded anything after buying it, Dell won't replace that for you).

Have to agree here. As Dell still sell the i9400, that's what your replacement will be.

But yeah, when replacing systems, Dell will try and match the origional purchase specs as close as posible. If a part has since been superseeded (eg: the 7800Go due to heat issues.
IIRC the 9400 originally came with the 7800Go didn't it?) and is unavailable, it is replaced with the 'new' part (eg: in the 7800Go's case, the 7900GS), but that's the limit of "upgrading" one should expect
AFAIK aftermarket upgrades arn't covered (kinda obvious tho) and odds on, the warranty will carry over from the stolen Laptop

Sorry i did not realise they still had the 9400 available for sale...

Mainly because when i was looking at the 9400 i just went to the Dell site and clicked on Gaming and the 9400 came up, and now its the XPS, i i just assumed.

Oh well the 9400 is still awesome laptop, might not be as good as the XPS, but im happy with that, as long as i get what i lost back. Biggest pain in the arse is all the porgrams and documents (especially some of my recent uni work) thats the biggest pain i guess.

I wonder if they will let me put in a bit extra and get the upgrade to the XPS? hmmmm... probably not as their insurance company will probably track that sort of thing. Oh well...

Thanks

just curious... why would your content insurance not cover the laptop? Isn't that the whole point of content insurance? To cover all content?

Yeah up to a certain dollar amount, but most policys do not cover mobile phones and laptops.

I could have got it put on the policy as a seperate item, however, as its not my place and i am just living there temporarily (with parents), it was not on the policy.

I have sent everything off to Dell, and hopefully hear something back soon.

Thanks

i know someone that went through dell's theft protection red tape

They rejected his claims saying the photo's didnt show enough breakage, so he took some more photos of the window which they broke in through and they finally accepted the claim. The laptop was the 9300, spec'd up too, so Dell replaced the whole thing with an identical 9300 with mouse, bag and sht that had been ordered with it in the first place.

I would like to see if anyone has been able to successfully request a different laptop - for eg inspiron 640m (to the same $ value) to replace the inspiron 9400 or maybe a fully loaded desktop (to the same $ value) replacing a laptop if they no longer required a laptop

Just checked my policy with CGU, it covers everything!

Though anything that's mobile and ca be run off a battery there's a cap of $1250 per item upto $5000 total (unless it's indivdually listed in the policy)
