Default Satellite 5200 not booting

Hello, I'm trying to fix a mates laptop, it doesn't seem to boot from HDD(has xp) or optical, I've tried different bootable media with no luck, also tried a usb floppy drive, just sits there with a blinking cursor, burner makes 3 funny sounds when laptop is turned on, it doesn't even play audio cds. Anyone know what it might be and how do you get into the bios? F12 is to choose what media you want to boot from, F11 ,del, F1 or F2 doesn't work.

Hold "ESC" before the Toshiba logo comes up. Easiest if you hold it while you power on, but can be done after CTRL+ALT+DEL if you're quick.

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.
Question marks are the new full stop?

Weird it seems to come up with Set default value ? (Y/N) BIOS v1.20
if I press yes then reboots and Toshiba splash screen comes up again then nothing, or if I press No it just freezes.
