Default Heatsink/Fan Weight - Is 760g Too Much?

Hi,

Ive just recieved a M2N32SLI Deluxe board, an AM2 4200+ processor and a Coolermaster Sussuro heatsink.

I picked up the heatsink and this thing is heavy.

I checked on the cooler master site and the heatsink weighs 685g and the fan weighs another 75g totalling 760g.

From searching google Ive noted that the maximum specified weight for a heatsink in a S754/S939/S940/AM2 is 450g.

So Im a bit concerned about snapping the AM2 bracket.

Should I use this heatsink or stick with the AMD supplied one?

You can use the heavy one, but be careful if you're moving your system around. Say if you were going to a LAN party, you should remove it during transport.

If you're not overclocking or you're scared that it'll cause damage to the bracket, then stick with the stock one.

Otherwise, it should be OK.

*looking at the CoolerMaster website*

I think it'll be OK, as the clip is one of those "3 holes on each side" type. (it'll distribute or spread the pulling load on the bracket)...I'm usually more worried about things when a mobo starts to flex a little when you install a HSF. (despite the reinforcing bracket on the other side).

The PC wont be moved around much.

Im planning on screwing the board to the case using all 9 screw holes so it should be sturdy in this instance

I guess I concerned about the 760g weight on the mounting bracket.

If you ain't gonna be moving it regularly or knocking it about, then it should be fine.

Ive seen these monsters.

Theyre huge and heavy and come with their own retention module.

The MN32SLI-Deluxe doesnt even come with a bracket on the opposite side of the board to provide additonal support for heavier heatsinks.

The single lugs on the AM2 bracket are a worry as well. If one of these snaps theres no redundancy like with a S939 three lug design.

thats a really good point, Howver Im sure the retention Mechanism would break before the Lug would.. Ive had a 9500CNPS retention bracket break on me ( due to a little corrosion) when I Moved My tower.
