Default What does the latest xbox360 firmware do?

So i'm looking at buying an xbox360 in the coming weeks and came across one yesterday which seemed like a pretty good deal with 7 games, 2 controllers etc. The only thing i am concerned about is that he told me that the console does not come with a warranty as it had been opened up and upgraded to the latest version of firmware. Xtreme Firmware and 7 or something he said. I'm just wondering what the new version of firmware does over the older versions? Should i be worried about this at all?

Thanks,
Joel

i think it allowes for copied games to be played(eg. backup games). as for playing on Live, afaik, the firmware hack is still undetectable by MS, so it should be safe, but just be conscious of upcoming updates that may detect the modified firmware.

um yeah, hes flashed the firmware in the dvd drive with a cracked one so it can play burnt games. So I'm guessing the 7 games aren't legit.

Worried? Depends, its illegal, so yeah, up to you.

anyway, offer him no more than $450.

If MS does end up being able to detect it, is it currently possible to flash it back to the original firmware?

So will that mean that the 7 games he gives me the choice of getting are all copied and i can't use them on xbox live?

yes, at the moment you can play those games on Live because MS can't detect the modified firmware.

And yes, if you have a backup of the original firmware (you'll have to ask the seller), then you can reflash it.

Hmm, so its pretty much only a matter of time until microsoft can find a way to detect it? If they do that means the games will be useless or they will cancel my live account or something?

well you can always reflash to the original firmware... or you can just not play on Live when they do figure a way to detect it. The most MS can do will ban you from Live. For those on dialup or don't play on Live much at all, this won't effect you much anyway.

2nd option would be to flash it back to original firmware and wait for a better solution to come out.

Thanks caudex. The guy just emailed me back and admitted they were all backup games and that i can purchase extra games for $15 each. I'm still not convinced about the price though..

IF microsoft do find out about the firmware do they ban your account so you can sign up for another account or do they IP ban you?

-console
-1 wireless controller
-20gb HD
-HD cables
-Headset
-Wireless adapter
-7 copied games

All for $840

Reasonable price or not?

I wouldn't pay that much for copied games, a warranty-less Xbox and a dodgy firmware.

Premium console new is around $620.
Headset comes with Live subscription normally, so if you're gonna get Live, it's pretty much free.
Not sure what the Wireless adapter is worth, but the games are basically not worth anything (cost of a blank DVD DL)

I wouldn't buy it for that price

Plus the risk of getting banned from Live later on.

They'll probably ban the serial number of the console, so no matter how many accounts you create, = no good.

oh yeah, as everyone else said, for that price, your getting ripped.

Tell him to shove it.

Premium Pack $600 at Toys r us
comes with 20gb HD and HD cables and wireless controller...
Wireless adaptor $135
Headset with 12 months Gold Live $89.95
Total $815..
For a new xbox360 with warranty and able to play on live

copied games are useless.. once they figure a way to detect the mod they will ban the console.. NO WAY AROUND IT!

I wouldnt pay more than $500 for the package he is offering..
