Getting it now from Fileplanet. Being on 512/128 doesn't really matter from where...

Just finished the demo. You get to play the first short mission which is laid out like a training level, teaching you to use your environment to progress (kicking down wooden structures and such and lifting and throwing objects) and finally how to fight, against some human guards. Following this you get to play the second mission which has been seen in the videos, featuring the orcs in the ****** temple area, although the demo unfortunately ends just before the Cyclops boss.
I must say it's just as good if not better than I expected. The way your character moves, with the head bobbing and full body awareness is great. You can look down and see your waist, legs and feet, and when swimming you see your hands stretching out in front of you. All the animation is fluid and realistic. Where the game really shines though is the combat. It looked fantastic in the videos, but it's even more fun playing it yourself. I had the most fun with the Short Sword which you find in a chest (you can also pick up the Orcs' cleaver and shield, though I'd killed them all and unfortunately didn't get to use it). First of all there are the basic swinging attacks if you tap the mouse button, but most of the time you'll be using the power attacks which are pulled off by holding a direction (forwards, backwards, strafe left or right) and holding down the mouse button for a couple of seconds. Two are different lunge attacks and two are swipe attacks. There's also the finishing move while the enemy is stunned on the ground and there's a rage meter that allows you to pull off a decapitation once full. One thing I especially liked was that your sword actually has to properly connect with the enemy - you can't just slash around in front of you and always hit. The lunge attacks for example have to be properly aimed otherwise your sword will just sail past the enemy's head (or whatever you happened to be aiming for). As seen in the videos you can also use the environment in combat, kicking enemies off high places, throwing barrels and such at them and pushing them onto spikes and fire. The only thing I didn't like about this was that objects like vases and barrels seem to kill in one hit when thrown. They should barely injure them at all, maybe just knock them down. The combat is far from hack 'n' slash, too - you have to parry enemy attacks (right mouse button) and plan each of your strikes. I had a quick go of the bow, daggers and the fireball magic but not enough to evaluate them properly at this stage. Overall the sword combat has to be some of the best I've ever played, it's very entertaining. The graphics are excellent and as I expected it should (since it runs on the Source engine) the demo ran on max settings with no trouble at all on my system (AMD 4000+, 2GB RAM, 7800GT). I hope more developers use Source in the future because not only does it look great but it actually runs properly, unlike the crap the likes of Oblivion and Call of Juarez run on. The only issue I had with the graphics was things further away appeared slightly blurry (yes, I had AF on) which I read may be due to colour correction which there is no option to turn on or off. Perhaps it will be added in the full version. Looks like I've gone on long enough so I'll say the sound and music was also very impressive, and overall this game is looking amazing. Can't even begin to imagine how good the multiplayer will be. EDIT: Ok, it looks like the word "s u n l i t" is banned

So is the demo long enough to warrant 1.4gig of download?
Also, the source engine looks 'ok' or even good, but it does NOT look as good as call of juarez etc. Source just lacks the shadow technology that gives you per-pixel lighting/shadows that doom, call of juarez and other games have. I do like the source engine as it's rather solid, but I wish it had some of that cool shadow stuff. |

I wouldn't say it's long enough to warrant the size, but for the enjoyment it is, and the fact that you can play through it multiple times with different builds (combat/stealth/magic/archer) extends the demo's lifetime.

I'm just saying the guy was saying how source looks fantastic and runs better than other engines. It's because it doesn't look as good as other engines =P
Plus there have been other games since doom3 that have used per-pixel lighting and shading WITH good physics. Source already looks a little aged, but it's solid enough and doesn't look bad so it's a good engine to use. To say source looks excellent or great is exadurating quite alot. It does look incredibly passable however. |

Either way. Doom3 engine is way more overated than Source. Doom3 engine wouldn't cut it for anything that the Source engine is used for. |

And yes gameplay is most important, and this looks to be a great game. I was merely commenting on the un-due praise the source engine's graphics tend to get. |
