what dvd drive does it have?

if its got a thomson, most likely dead and will need replacement. replacing an xbox dvd drive is similar to that of a computer, although now that some places are clearing out xboxes for $99 or less it might not be a worthy repair.

if you dont know how to work out which drive is which, google "what xbox dvd drive do i have".

if a clean doesnt fix it, you'll have to replace it

although while your 'box is open, try cleaning the contacts/jiggling things around first (you'll notice the inside of the xbox is very PC-like if youre worried) - cant hurt.

new DVD drives arent that cheap though, and you'll only really be able to get good prices from ebay.

oh ok. so instead of replacing dvd drives, would it just be better to buy a new xbox?

my brother has heaps if shit on his xbox, if he did buy a new one, would he able to transfer it?
