Hi
I have a male desexed cat which is around 4 - 5 years old. He is a white/ginger house cat. Around a year ago he began squirting piss on backyard toys, the fences, trees and bushes, cars and anything else around the house and neighborhood. Although this isn't a massive issue I’m wondering if this is typical behavior of most if not all male cats. He started this behavior around the same time that the next door neighbors got a female kitten. That cat now comes over almost everyday and spends heaps of time at our place. Our cat doesn’t seem to mind its presence and I give both of them plenty of attention. He sometimes bites it and chases it but I have figured that it is all for play and not serious as the cat keeps coming back. The squirting business isn’t much of a problem but if it were controllable or even preventable then id like to fix the issue so that i can let him indoors. Does anyone know why this thing happens and should I be worried about it? Thanks for any advice |

He's just marking his territory, like dogs and other animals do

Called "spraying" - this is typical marking territory behaviour, but a little less common in desexed males than "complete" ones.
Get a water pistol and give him a squirt when you catch him in the act - worked for us

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try the water pistol technique and see what happens.

Is he desexed? My friend had a cat who was sqraying on everything, furniture, plants, trees, people... you name it, it smelled like cat pee! They went to get him desexed (he was still young, a year old maybe) and they found out that it was neither male nor female and there was nothing they could do to stop him spraying apart from behavioural management! They ended up having to put it down after trying really hard at behavioural management, which was sad, because it was the most awesomest kitty.. you could wear it as a scarf all day and it wouldn't care...

I am 99% sure that he is desexed. Perhaps the vet that did it lied by why on earth would they do that? Is there any way I could find out without taking him back to the vet? If its a simple thing like marking his territory then I guess nothing can be done about it and it doesn't really matter. It's just that I'd love to let him roam around indoors.

Yep.
I had a big old black desexed tabby male and when we got a new male kitten (not desexed) he started to spray as well. We ended up giving away the new kitten as a result of it being a pain in the arse and Jim went back to normal

Generally Vets take the male kitty's nuts out.
No responsibility taken for following advice. Scrotum located below and forward of anus. Gently give Tom a feel up around the scrotum - two person job if kitty is feel up averse. If you can find two sultana sized nuts in the scrotum = sexed No nuts - empty scrotum - de-sexed. From posts above - despite all femnist propaganda, males are NOT totally driven by testosterone - even a neuter will get pissed at someone in his territory. (Sorry for awful pun)

I remember reading a study on rats, they de-sexed them (i think) so they didn't produce testosterone. Then they injected various levels of testosterone and studied the effects on the rats libido and they found there was no increase in libido with increased testosterone levels.

LOL inspectr. I'm not that desperate and I value the skin on my arms and face. The last time I checked out a small wound on my cats shoulder area, I got scratched to hell and the cuts got infected. Anyway I found the vet papers and it states that he has been desexed, vaccinated and micro chipped or something.

I have a fully SEXED male ginger cat, now 2 years old, that has been 'spraying' since he hit puberty at a little before 1 yr of age.
The spraying is usually outside and therefore not much of a problem, but every time a female cat from down the road comes past his territory, he goes beserk and will spray even when inside the house - which is a real problem. I'm going to try the water pistol technique, but i was wondering if getting him neutered now (at 2 years old) will affect this habbit, or if its too late for it to make any behavioural changes. As a side note, this cat is rather agressive, and is constantly getting into fights with 2 neighbouring male cats. (he always has at least 1 open wound, usually on his face or paws.) Is there anything you can give cats to help them mellow out - vitamin B? Catnip? Cheers, Jamal |
