Default Riedel Sommelier wine glasses in Melbourne?

Anyone know where I could pick up some Riedel Sommelier glasses for not too many moneys in Melbourne?

Specifically after the Riesling Grand Cru 4400/15 or Chardonnay 4400/0

Riedel Sommelier and not many moneys are not two words which go together. However, It seems almost every decent winestore these days is blatantly pimping out their riedels so hunt around. I can't blame em, they must be making a tidy profit off them. Personally, I think there are glasses which perform almost as well for much less. However, if your set on the Riedels and are willing to ship, Peters of Kensington has the Chardonnay for $73 and the Riesling for $67. Can I suggest the Chianti for the reds instead. It seems to be the more classic red wine shape and works well with a wider range.

Don't get too hung up on the Riedel name though unless you really, really care about them being hand made. The Spiegelau's are almost as good for a fraction of the price.

Hmmm...interesting. Seems the same glass is sold as a Chianti and a Riesling Grand Cru. Both have the 4400/15 code.

That could be the reason someone I asked earlier today didn't know of the Grand Cru glass.

As for price...yeah I know they're expensive but they're for a 21st gift so I figure what the hell and there is something nice about good hand blown glasses.

Uh... no. The chianti is emphatically not the same as the riesling. Take a look on the pictures. The riesling has a outcurved lip wheras the chianti has the classic red wine shape. The riesling is both taller and holds more (too much IMHO).

Yeah, thats what I was trying to figure out. I wouldn't drink from them myself but they're awesome as a present. Wish someone bought me a set of Riedel's for my 21st birthday *grumble* *grumble*. Just make sure they're for someone who'll use them and not put them away for ever because they're afraid of breaking a $70 glass.

Did some chasing around today and there is a LOT of confusion about which glass is called what out there. Simplest is to go by the codes.

The glass that pretty much everyone locally calls a Riesling is sold by Riedel as a Rheingau, product code (4400/1)

http://www.riedel.com/website/englis...srheingau.html

The glass I'm after, the Riesling Grand Cru / Chianti, is the same shape and product code (4400/15)

http://www.riedel.com/website/englis...sriesling.html

Anyway...got it sorted eventually after calling a few mates in the restaurant business.
