I would do a GIG

Only because its based off your Windows XP and I really think that requires atleast a GIG for anything more then Calculator and Solitare

i run mine on 512 (2x256) and thats plenty for MCE.

Though if you're gonna buy ram (ie not already lying around), might as well spend a little more and get the 1gb.

1GB of some value RAM. That would be more than enough unless you use your HTPC as a general PC as well and you intend to game with it. Even then you could still get away with 1GB.

If you intend to do heavy encoding tasks then the more the merrier, as long as you have a suitable HDD setup to compliment it.

I wanted to throw a dual tv tuner in it, and do recording and playing at the same time if possible, would I need 2gig? It would be only used for a media pc

1gb would prob be alright, is it a dual core system? 2GB can never hurt, no one wants jerky playback.

Before this gets even more confusing with recommendations, what exactly does this HTPC currently consist of?

512MB for HTPC with no HDTV Tuner. For just streaming DivX videos or Mp3's and playing MAME etc 512 is enough...even my crap laptop which is a P3 750Mhz with only 256MB ram can handle those tasks...

but 1GB is recommended for HDTV Tuner/Video playback and recording....
