Default A8Js w/512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7700

i came accross this on notebook forums:

"2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T7200 processor
14.1-inch, 1,440 by 900 pixel widescreen LCD
dual-layer DVD+-R/RW drive
2GB of RAM
802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0
built-in webcam
100GB hard drive
512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7700"

sounds bloody sweet, but the link to the news source doesnt work. anyway, the user who posted this claims it would 'be avaliable in a couple weeks,' although you would think that if that were the case, we would all know about it already.

anyone know anything about this laptop, or it's 7700? i wonder how much better it would be than a 7600.
i went to a few computer shops in the city (perth) and saw 3dmark03 on the same lappy (but with 7600, T2500 and 1gig ram). it was ok (scored 8900), but being the first graphics card i had seen after my mates GO 7900gs, i dont think i would be happy enough with it.
probably just going to wait and see if this card performs much better than the 7600.

obviously it would be pretty damn expensive when it comes out. which brings up my next question.. does anyone know how long x1600's have been widley avaliable for around $2500 in a8j's?
i think that would be a fairly good indication as to how long it will take for 7700s to be the new 7600/x1600.

Edit: forgot to mention, it is not stated wether the 512mb is dedicated or hyperthreaded. if so, you could assume this would be a big step up from 7600/x1600 512 hypermem

Should be 512 Dedicated, like the 7600 on the A8Jm.

oh ok, the A8Jm i saw today was 256 dedicated / 256 shared, wasnt aware of that

just found this:

"Date Posted: 08/29/2006The Asus A8Js is a sleek thin-and-light machine with a focus on gaming and multimedia. At $1,499, you're not likely to find a lower-priced notebook with this much 3D-graphics power.

The silver-and-black chassis weighs 5.2 pounds, and is comfortable in the hand thanks to the system's rounded edges. Flip the lid and you'll find a sharp-looking silver keyboard deck with a full-sized black keyboard. The keyboard is comfortable to use, though the glossy touchpad takes some getting used to. We were surprised to see no dedicated volume (you can use Fn + F11/F12) or multimedia buttons.

The 14.1-inch glossy widescreen panel delivers deep, rich colors (though watch out for glare in typical office lighting conditions). As with other notebook LCDs, the panel's viewing angle is fine from side to side, but poor from above. The 1440 x 900-pixel resolution means increased screen real estate, but also rather small fonts in applications at default settings.

The A8Js delivers plenty of features for the price, including a built-in webcam, a 100GB hard drive, a dual-layer multiformat DVD burner, 2GB of RAM, and both 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0.

The 2-GHz Core 2 Duo T7200 processor delivered good productivity test results with a MobileMark05 score of 227. More impressive is the whopping 9,754 on 3DMark03, thanks to the 512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 graphics engine, making the A8Js an affordable gaming portable in addition to a solid workaday PC. The tradeoff for this graphics power is short battery life, as the system lasted just 2 hours and 36 minutes.

If you can live with limited tech support hours (19 hours weekdays and 9.5 hours weekends), the Asus A8Js delivers the most muscle per pound of any 14.1-inch notebook."

There's some more info about the new A8J series here: http://www.google.com/translate?u=ht...&hl=en&ie=UTF8

Apparently they have interchangable video cards, so may be upgradable in the future.

Some time in the next month. The machine is still covered by a NDA, there was a stuffup at laptopmag which resulted with the review being put up on their website early.
