Default Notebook Ram now Cheaper than Desktop Ram

With the recent price hikes in desktop DDR2. Notebook sodimms are now cheaper than their desktop cousins..

I don't ever remember this happening in the past

http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

Generic 1gig DDR2 $137

1gd so-dimm DDR2 Notebook $125

I might be time to upgrade all those notebooks to 2 gig of ram.. before prices catch up with the notebook modules.

I expect that it's just because of lower demand (when the manufacturer changes their prices, desktop prices change fast because the stock moves so quickly; laptop RAM moves much more slowly).

Apparently in the US the notebook RAM prices have just gone through the roof ($116US for 1GB of DDR2-667 now; here you can get similar RAM for ~$119AU).

Definitely a good time to upgrade, unless you can afford to wait a month or so for prices to come back down.

Don't forget you got 25% off as well.. By the time our machine arrives.. notebook ram prices will be through the roof...

Plus the ram is guarranteed to work and warranted properly..

I think we paid. $357 x 0.75 = $267.75 for our upgrades.. or basically $133 per module. with the understandign that the orginal 512mb was probably worthless.. 'cause you would needed to keep it for warranty purposes..

$133 for DDR667 warranteed with the machine is pretty good I think...

Heres the static ice prices to compare

I don't think RAM prices are going to drop for some time...

There hasn't been any major catastorphic event...

Simply there is now real proper demand for DDR2 since
1) AMD and Intel systems now use it.
2) Conroe is out.. everybody is upgrading.. 'cause its a real upgrade
3) Vista is coming soon.. more ram needed.
4) Games are getting ever taxing.. usch that 2x1gig.. is becoing the new standard...

Also historically.. ram increases well before christmas.. and drop down well after Chinese New Year.. of soemthing like that due to demand..

There's forecasts or even highe ram prices shortly..

I've always wonder whether DDR2-667 ram is any faster than 533 ram on yonah / merom systems.... I've yet to see any comparisons

eg in
Pentium 4 800FSB / 200fsb chips.. dual channel DDR400 saturates the bandwidth.

In Conroe 1066FSB / 266fsb chips dual channel DDR2-533 saturates the bandwidth...

Pentium M 533FSB / 133FSB dual channel ddr266 staurate the bandwidth..

Merom 667FSB / 166FSB dual chanel ddr2-333 should sarturate the bandwidth.. (yet we all all buying DDr2-533 and 667 chips...)

The only benchmarks I've seen put DDR2-533 ahead of DDR2-667 by a tiny bit - but that was in dual-channel (so both were saturating the FSB). In single-channel DDR2-667 would almost certainly be quicker because DDR2-533 can't saturate the FSB.

Thanks for the info, it's probably about time for me to upgrade the 2x256mb in my Benia based Dell since PC2700 is down to $138/gb.

If you reduce the number of words in your search string you can obtain more results for so dimm ddr2 ram;

http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/...o+dimm+667+1gb

Cheapest 1gb stick of 667mhz DDR2 so-dimm ram is $119 from Stonebridge Computing (located in the Blue Mountains NSW). (on 10/9/2006).
3 years warranty too

Indeed, that's the cheapest I've found too (I ordered one stick of that RAM last week, along with a few other items). They're an OCAU sponsor too.

Considering the price difference between DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 ($2.04 for a 1GB stick), I'd definitely just get 667.

Interesting. The deal appears to have gone (and price is up $30). I'm glad I bought when I did.

EDIT: Link.
